THE. PUBLIC ACCOUNTS.
STATEMENT BY THE PREMIER. (Per Press Association.) WELLINGTON, Last Night. Referring to the public accounts, the Prime .Minister stated to-day, ip reply to certain criticisms, that the £2,400,000 of excess Customs revenue collected in the financial year 1920-21, as a result of the over-importation of goods into the Dominion, was reserved from 31st March, 1921, for the purpose of supplementing the revenue of the year which has just closed. The amount, is held in cash and liquid securities, and is available for the requirements of the current year. Mr' Massey stated that criticisms he had seen were reasonable, and on the whole favourable. [The Prime Minister evades the real point at issue, which is this: Did the excess Customs duties appear in the accounts of 1920-21? If they did, why should they also appear in the accounts of the year 1921-22? If they did not appear in the accounts of 1920-21, why did the Treasury officials exclude them from the balancesheet of 1921-22? —Ed. “M.D.T.”]
