AUSTRALIAN CRISIS.
A STRAINED SITUATION. i AUTHORITIES FORCING THE ISSUE. .•strike preparations. [By Electric Cable-Copyright] [Aust. and N.Z. Cable Association.] (Received Friday, 11.30 p.m.) SYDNEY, May 12. Tire Labour Council has issued a statement which says the Government refused to conduct an inquiry into the objectionable conditions now be- ' ing forced upon the railway workers ' and now stands as the enemy of the organised workers. The men’s lead- | ers arc exerting every effort to pre- , vent an outbreak, and after an exhaustive effort last night, succeeded ■ in keeping them at work. The leaders arc under no delusion : that the authorities are determined to force the issue, and the former are working feverishly to consolidate the workers’ organisations. If a strike is inevitable, then it must take place at a time most favourable to the workers. The Board of Trade has fixed the basic wage at £3 18/ all the Labour representatives on the Board agreeing that the new wage was a fair thing. The Board will again review the wage in October. •
