THE RIGHT THING.
The Minister of Agriculture has at iaat the courage to <io roe right thing. He states that he does not see his way clear to. recommend Cabinet to continue its guarantee of a fixed price for wheat. The reason he advances for this decision is that he thinks the Pominion can produce enough wheat ier its own use at a payable price.
He might have added mat the Canterbury producers have been growing sufficient wheat for the country'e requirements for the last fifty years, with one or two solitary exceptions. All the talk about farmers going out of business unless they are guaranteed a price, is so much camouflage. The consumers of the Dominion are paying far too much for their bread this year, because the Minister yielded to "the pressure of Canterbury growers. The Minister may lose his seat because he will not listen further to the clamour of Canterbury farmers. But had he continued the scandalous subsidy at the expense of all other .sections of the community, the probabilities are that he would have precipitated the downfall of the whole Ministry.
