LOAN FROM AMERICA.
The Australian Press Association states that an American banking, firm has offered to subscribe New Zca- ; land’s fiA'c million loan on more advantageous terms than the loan Avas granted to Queensland. Are avc to assume from this message that Mr Massey has been in negotiation with the financial houses in Ncav York, or is Wall Street merely putting out a > feeler? It Avould be a strange commentary upon the attitude of some of our politicians toAvards the Ameri- ' can Meat Trust if the money required for financing the meat pool Avere obtained from a body of fman- ; ciers in Avhich members of the Trust haA - e particular interest. Such things have happened in the past, and have excited considerable comment. But Mr Massey stated a fetv Aveeks ago, Avhen the Queensland loan Avas being floated in America, that he had no intention of seeking financial assistance from that quarter. The mere mentioning of the offer from America may enable New Zealand to secure more satisfactory terms in the Old Country. The taxpayers of this Dominion have no desire to folloAV the example of Queensland, and Mr Massey should be the last in the world to entertain such a proposal.
