FIXTURES. Dec. 26, 27—Dunedin J.C Dee. 26, 27—Westland R.E. Dec. 26, 27 —Taranaki J.C Dec. 26, 27. 29 —Manawatu R.O. Dec. 26, 28, Jan 2, 3 —Auckland R.C. Dec. 30, Jan. 2, 4 —Greymouth R.C. Jan. 2-—Wyndham R.C. Jan. 2, 3—Hawke’s Bay J.C. Jan. 2, 3 —Marton J.C. Jan. 2, 3 —Wairarapa JR.C. Jan. 11—Rotorua R.C. Jan. 17, 19—Wairoa’ County R.C. Jan. 21, 23, 25—Wellington R.C. Jan. 21, 23 —Foxton R.C. Jan. 3, 4 —Southland R.C. It will be noticed that the handicapper for Marton Jockey Club started his imposts for the Cup at a 9.0 maximum, and I think when all is said and done it will be found that at any distance over a mile a 9.0 maximum will serve the desired end (to bring a Held together.) it may be that until the fields ‘‘settle down” —I.Cj, until all the minimtun weight horses fit to race over a distance have shown their true form—there will be some dissatisfaction but things would eventually right themselves, for the simple reason that the more lightly-weighted animals having (by winning), raced themselves up in the weights, it must naturally follow that in a short space of time the "wheat would be sifted from the tares,” and we would have fields racing in their own class, instead of as Is now the case, good-class animals having to be weighted out of any chance of winning. Of course, there would be exceptions; nobody would expect a handicapper to let Amythas or Gloaming get into a Marton Cup at 9.0 against, say, a Molyneaux, a Rouen, or a Royal Star. Space will not permit me at present to enlarge on this prime factor to the success of decent-sized fields and good racing. It is an aspect of the sport which could and should have been regulated (and legislated for) long ago, but because the “system” of burdening a racehorse out of any possible chance of winning has been in vogue since the days of our greatgreater racing grandfathers (and grandmothers, too), and, because many of us have grown bald, mouldy, and biased, we decline to advsnee with the times and make a step towards advancement of the sport; and, if, to keep abreast of the new world in general, why not on humanitarian lines? Under the heading “Unusual Handicapping,” a late issue of the Sydney “Referee” had the following, which may be digested with wholesome results; —“Mr J. Tapper, the newlyappointed handicapper for -the Sydney Suburban clubs, certainly has unusual methods, and while it is possible that he may be correct in his opinions and ideas, he is certainly hard to follow. For instance, in the Juvenile Handicap at Warwick Farm on Saturday the Randwlck trainer F. Williams entered two colts, Eracre and Pardex. Both cost the same amount of money at the yearling sales, and both are nicely bred, the former being by Linacre from Mitraille, while Pardex is by Eudorous from Paradisea. However, although they had never started, and consequently were unknown quantities, Mr Tanner gave Eracre 8.1 and Pardex 7.0. The majority of handicappers invariably give untried youngsters the same weight, allowances being made for their sex.” Dainty Step and Kilrush are reported to be doing excellent work at Trentham. The former is expected to run a great race in the Manawatu Cup. . .

One of the fittest horses in training at Feilding is Borealis. Other horses in Attwood’s stable are in good fettle. Spook has been schooling over the hurdles at Trentham, and gives promise of making a name for himself over the little jumps. Esperance ran a mile and a-quarter at Trentham the other morning, the distance occupying 1.17. The Cup candidate finished well.

Printemps continues to give evidence that he will bo a fit horse on Boxing Day.

It is stated that J. O’Shea is to have the mount on Anomaly in the Railway Handicap at Ellerslie. As Aureate will be carrying a lightweight in the Auckland Cup, the stable has been searching about for a lad capable of handling Desert Gold's sister, and according to latest advices the choice has fallen on H. Wiggins. What a sturdy mare Trentham Rose must be. After having travelled up and down both islands since the season opened, she is to be taken to the Coast meetings during the holidays.

Wyndham, away down the far end of the South Island, is a popular racing centre, inasmuch as whilst the racing days there are extremely limited, there is a big proportion of owners in the district. The local club holds a one-day meeting on New Year’s Day. and includes in its programme a couple of trots which usually result in big fields going to the post. At one time the Cup was worth lOOOsovs., but it has gone back to* SOOsovs,. which, for a small place, must be considered very good indeed. This year the Cup field should be classy, seeing that it includes amongst other horses Royal Mac, Elens, Almoner, Bengeroop, Bonnie "Maid, and Geneial Advance.

New Zealand is not the only country in the world where totalisator receipts are decreasing. At Durban recently ||Jie investments were down by about £2OOO, and the authorities were greatly troubled over this trifle.
