The handicapper has ladled it out to Kilrush (8.7) lor the Stratford Cup. T cannot sec him giving Stork half a stone nor Egmont Park 131bs. -Malingerer has got into this 1J miles at 6.9. Huh! Whafor! Halcyon has been nominated for some hurdle races (minimum 9.0) up Taranaki way. Gets in at 9.10 and so on. Now, what in the name of all that is equitable has Halcyon ever done on the flat or in the air. to warrant anyone handicapping him? Poor, decent old Percy Coffey. The "man of might" has been and anchored Halcyon first pop!

Anomaly's weight for the Railway Handicap has been increased by lib. only for his wfn at Woodville, but Fulsome's impost goes up Gibs., and Purple Spur's 61bs. Prom Auckland comes word that Silver Link is in great buckle and is expected to make a good bid for the Railway Handicap. It will not surprise anyone if she wins.

Although there is a lair number or horses exercising' every morning on the Feilding tracks, the work done is nothing out of the ordinary, tmd present indications do not point to the likelihood of anything- local being raced after any of the big stakes during the Christmas holidays. I'm not writing anything about the New Year bustlings just now! A meeting of the creditors of F. E. Jones, who some four years ago retired from the saddle, was held at Dunedin last week. He put £IOOO into the Lauder Lane Coal Company, an unsuccessful venture, and now finds that he is responsible for not only that £IOOO. but as much more as his estate will yield, since the other members of the syndicate, have no means. The creditors and all concerned, expressed sympathy with Jones, it being recognised that he had got into this fix: through inexperience and bad luck. It is not customary nowadays for horses to be raced more than once during the course of a day's racing, but in the days gone by it was a common practice, if a horse was any good at all. to saddle him twice over any distance. 1 think,'however, in this connection Carbine's records will takesome healing; perhaps they stand out siiiguhirlv. At three years old. at the V.H.C. meeting (18S9) Carbine contested and won the All-Aged Stakes, 1 mile, and two hours afterwards won the Loch Plate, 2 miles; same year, at Svdney, won All-Aged Stakes. 1 mile, later in the afternoon won Cumberland Plate, 2 miles. At four years (season 1889-90), won V.R.C. AllAged Stakes, 1 mile, and Loch Plate, 2 miles (lOst.) .At A.J.C. meeting, same season, again won All-Aged Stakes and Cumberland Plate, 1 and 3 miles respectively. And, also, it should be remembered he had as opponents such history-making racers as Abercorn, Melos, Sir William, Melos, Sir William, Dreadnought, etc. And vet there are people who will persist in writing to the effect that Abercorn was the more brilliant racehorse. Royal Abbey and Starland were given a run at Te Awamutu on Saturday. While the former ran' into third place ift the Cup. Starland was not heard of. ' Royal Abbey's performance under 9.0 entitles him to respect at the Ellerslie meeting, but as for Starland's chance in the Cup it is problematical whether he can encompass the distance in time to be amongst the place-getters. I cannot see him in the first flight. What a good old horse Arran is to go out and beat Fulsome at Te Awamutu in 1.13 1-5. And, just by the way, isn't Fulsome going to make trouble in her racing at Auckland'.' She will be a stake-winner. Nominations for Wellington Trotting Club's meeting close at 8 p.m. to-morrow. But for an error on the part oi several trainers, the entries for the Manawatu Club's meeting would have swelled very considerably. It is a peculiarity on the part of owners and trainers to leave their nominations until the last minute. Rumoured that Farceur may be one of the surprises of the Ellerslie meeting. He will meet Epitaph, and possibly the colt will prevail. Harold Young will bo riding Royal Star in the Auckland Cup and George Young will be up on Foo Chow. Borealis and Pluto had a run over four furlongs at Feilding one morning last week, Attwood's horse having the best of it at the finish. If I told my readers the time occupied in traversing the pipe-opener they would not believe it. so 1 may as well reserve the information for the edification of my readers later on.

Many followers of the turf are under the impression that there is to be a 10/ totalisator at Awapuni this meeting. Such will not be the case.
