“JOB CONTROL.”
ON AUSTRALIAN STEAMERS. [By Electric Cable—Copyright.] [Aust. and N.Z. Cable Association.] (Received Monday, 5.5 p.m.) SYDNEY', December 19. The Seamen’s Union has announced that “job control” will be introduced on the steamers Moira, Araloum, and Kowarra, where it is considered that the numbers of tho respective crews are not sufficient.
Surprise was caused by the announcement that the Makambo, which was duo to sail for the New Hebrides, had been held up by the firemen. It is now stated that the Makambo was held up owing to the illness of the cook. Ho has been replaced, and the vessel has sailed. According to advices from Melbourne, both parties in the Mataram dispute have conferred with the Commonwealth Industrial Registrar and have arrived at a settlement. The owners in Sydney deny any knowledge of It. REPORT DENIED. NO JOB CONTROL. (Received Monday, 9.25 p.m.) MELBOURNE, Last Night. Tho General Secretary of the Seamen’s Union denies that the Union proposes to put the job control policy into opei’ation. He states that the men have been advised to refrain from any action likely to x>recipitate trouble. THE DISPUTE SETTLED. (Received Monday, 9.25 p.m.) SYDNEY', Last Night. Mr Burns Philips has received advice from Melbourne that as a result of the action by the Industrial Registrar the Mataram dispute has been temporarily settled. The vessel is sailing to-morrow, both parties having agreed to submit the manning question to a manning committee appointed under the Navigation Act.
