MARQUIS OF SALISBURY.

PUBLICATION OF HIS “LIFE.” [By Electric Cable—Copyright.] [Aust, and N.Z. Cable Association.] LONDON, November 16. Hodder and Stoughton have published the "Life of the Marquis of Salisbury,” by his daughter, Lady Gwendolen Cecil. The work includes letters written during his sojourn in Australia and New Zealand. Writing in 1852 from Melbourne, he> found he could gather little of the condition of the Church there, because the great mass of the people seemed to have an all-absorbing interest in gold, and had almost forgotten the existence of Christianity. He found Adelaide almost evacuated and on thei verge of ruin through tho gold rush. Melbourne was thronged with ephemeral plutocrats, generally illiterate, hurrying to exchange gold nuggets for velvet gowns tor their wives and unlimited whisky for themselves. Curiously enough ..he found more to admire at the diggings. He was prepared to find tho social anarchy which characterised California, but instead he fotmd more order and civility than he witnessed in his own native village of Hatfield. He records the strong feeing, prevailing against Downing Street, and adds: “The people are, apt to bo riled at having their minutest affairs settled for them at a distance of 16,000 miles by clerks without the faintest notion of the questions handled. We alienate our colonies, harass every Ministry, for the exquisite privilege of supporting some thirty useless clerks.” The Marquis of Salisbury’s political career is interestingly dealt with.
