The monthly general meeting of the Whakaronga Sub-branch of the R.S.A., was held in the local hall on Monday evening last* when the president (Mr T. H. P. Davey), presided over a very large attendance- of members. It was decided to hold a smoke concert on November 30th and to invite thereto a number of soldier settlers from the surrounding districts, in order to obtain a better understanding of the conditions under which the men on the land arei at present working. Mr D. Wells was elected president of the newly formed Defence Rifle Club in connection with the branch, and as a very suitable range has been obtained on Messrs Hay and Chester’s .propery on the Whakaronga-Bunny-thorpe Road, the club should soon be in full swing. In connection with the funds of the branch, it was decided to ear-mark all available cash for the purpose of erecting a memorial in honour of the men of this district who made the great sacrifice. A picnic will be held on the Te Matai property of Mr Wells, on New Year’s Day, when it is hoped to have a large gathering of returned men and their friends. Very lively dissatisfaction was expressed at the action of the Government in suspending the Soldiers’ Settlement Act, it being pointed out that although this was done on the score of economy, the Government had spent, and was spending large sums on useless commissions.
