DEFENCE OF WOMAN.

(To the Editor.) Sir,—As a woman, I may be meanminded, narrow-minded, and the last word is cut out. I like to see noble men putting all the blame for the weakness of humanity on a woman’s shoulders. From a clear, straight point pf view, what can we expect from a boy or girl, whose father’s body is bloated and besotted with drink, and whoso brain is always floating in fumes of whisky, brandy, and beer, the taproom his palace, whose wife, before the said child was born a weakling, was ill-fed, illtreated, and ill-clad, bullied, and abused by her husband, no freedom of body, soul, or mind, and the children starving for the money their father spends on swanking his own body? Children are often made weak by the strength of beer their father drinks. But other men than the man who drinks can rear weaklings, too. Both parents are often as weak-nat-ured as a pie-crust. Talking about the drink traffic, I think myself, that the Government are more to blame than anyone else for the state of affairs. We have inspectors for beehives. milk, etc., taut who ever inspects the drink that men pay for. Give a man a decent glass of beer or any other drink, and no one will suffer. I am for everyone pleasing them, selves. No one has any right to interfere with the Iberty of his fellowmen. But, as far as weaklings are concerned, who to-day is showing the weakest side? What about the murders, suicides, and crime at the present time, and the woman-killing. Who is the weak person now, man or woman? Nature is a very strange .'ompound, and a man should never ( un down a woman and her small follies, its his own mother was a woman. —I am, etc., DANNEVIRKE NO. 8.
