HOOKEY.

THE LADIES' TOURNAMENT. Pessimists there arc who still shy clear of anything 1 with the number "thirteen" attached to it, but on Saturday next the thirteenth annual Dominion ladies' hockey championship tournament commences on the local Sportsground. The belief that this number is unlucky is rudely upset on this occasion, as the tournament promises to surpass the twelve preceding ones, both in the number of teams competing and the interest shown by outside associations. AH- the previous winners of the coveted challenge cup are represented, with the exception of Christchurch, and from reports to have the present holders, Poverty Bay, arc sending down a strong- combination to defend their rights to the premier position in ladies' hockey. Those in the know quite expect to sec the cup change its location this year, and some fine spectacular and exciting games are in store for the local public. The fact of the tournament being held here has been the means of drawing record entries, owing to our central position, and the presence of some 200 lady players displaying their various representative colours will give quite a gay appearance to the town for over a week. The public need have no hesitation about their enthusiasm being raised to its highest pitch during the progress of these games, especially during the latter part .of the tourney. Arrangements have been made for a regular service to and from the ground, and with the clerk of the weather in his best mood large crowds are expected to witness the various contests. Season tickets admitting to all matches can be procured from all local players for the modest sum of 5/. Programmes giving the names and colours of the competing teams will be available on the grounds. The following fixtures have been drawn for the tournament: — A SECTION. Saturday, September 10.
