His Honour Mr Juali.;- Tasking leached Palmerston North from Wanganui yesterday. The death is reported from Wanganui of Catherine T. W. Herdman, aunt of Mr Justice Herdman. Mr A. Bates, a well-known Canterbury footballer, and a member of the Linwood Club, died a few days ago from peritonitis. Dr. G. H. Eobcrtson, of the military hospital, Trentham Camp, has been appointed medical superintendent of the Wanganui Hospital. The death occurred in Wanganui on Sunday last, at the age of 45 years, of Mr Charles F. Tasker, who was wellknown in Palmerston North. Councillor M. H. Oram, of Palmerston North, returned home ill from hisvisit to Napier, and will bo confined to his home for several days. Mr David Moodie, a resident of Oamaru for forty years, died a few days ago at the age of 75. He was a native of the Orkney Islands. The Bev. A. Grant, of Dannevirke, who was granted three months' leave of- absence on account of ill-health, has now recovered and resumed his duties this week.

Mr Julius Jackson, one of the departmental managers of Messrs f-jrnith and Smith, oil merchants, of Wellington, died at Christchurch on Sunday from pneumonia.

The engagement is announced of Miss Norma Cooper, eldest daughter of Captain H. Cooper, 209 Ferguson Street, Palmerston North, to Sergv A. M. Simpson, N.Z. Army Ordnance corps. At St. Patrick's Church, Napier, on Monday, Miss Frances Kathleen (Marion) Hamlin, daughter of Mr and Mrs E. A. G. Hamlin, of Tennyson Street, Napier, was married to Mr Walter James Moran, son of Mr and Mrs J. Moran, of Eketahuna. Tho death is reported in the English papers of 'Miss Emily Davies, the founder of Girton College, Cambridge. Miss Davies, who had reached her 92nd year, devoted most of her life to the furtherance of two closely-connected reforms intended to elevate her sex— Women's suffrage and the higher education of women.

A London correspondent says:—At the medical graduation ceremony at Edinburgh University, the only New Zealander "capped" was Mr James Baird Aitken, who graduated with honours. He belongs to Palmerston North. Dx\ Aitken is at present taking up general practising in Edinburgh as a preliminary to further study.

In its annual report the Wanganui Education Board, referring to the retirement of Mr Fred Pirani, says:—Mr Pirani had been a member of the Board for some 25 years, and his decision to retire was received with great regret. During tho whole period of his service as a member and as chairman, Mr Pirani threw himself wholeheartedly into the work, and with his natural ability and wonderful grasp of educational affairs, he was able to bring about many reforms, resulting not only in benefit to this district, but to the Dominion as a whole. He will ever be remembered as a keen and tireless wdrker in the interests of the little ones, whose welfare it is our duty and pleasure to advance.
