WESTERN ENGINEERS .MAINTAIN LEAD Although there was a general rearranging of the carnival emblems yesterday, the Western Engineers maintain the premier position, and (ho Eastern Ditchers remain at . the bottom of the list of pennants. The following are the positions of the various candidates; —Western Engineers, Northern Trenchers, Manawatu Spademen, Pohangina Sappers, Kairanga Diggers, Feilding Tunnellers, Horowhenua Miners, Oroua Dclvcrs, Southern I'ickmcn, Eastern Ditchers.
The St. Helen’s Fair Committee met yesterday. It. was decided to charge lid admission at night, but holders of reveille tickets to be admitted free. The stalls have boon allocated as follows: No. 1, moat market; No. f., Kairanga Diggers; No. 3, Southern Pickmen; No. 4, Manawatu Spademen; No. 5, Northern Trenchers; No. 6, Western Engineers; No. 7, Eastern Ditchers. A tea room has .also been arranged. A number of attiacti\e games, interesting competitions and amusing side-shows Will prove an added attraction, and the Commercial Travellers are organising .some original stunts. . „ . ... One of the features of the fair will be a butcher’s shop, under the control of Mr D. Collis, Kairanga. Mr Coins has secured a prime Kairanga for a guessing competition oy If nday and Saturday.
Much discussion ishaking place concerning the position of tlio flags, and many arc puzzled as to the sections contributing so largely being at the. bottom. This is due to the fact that each section was nominally allotted an initial credit of 5000 square feet, equal to £250. Those who at# the outset bought a further area naturally put their flag to the, top and it just as naturally became a mark tor tnc other nine to dig away from. the weak sections were, of course, left severely ♦ alone, while the stronger ones not only were deprived of then initial crdlt by the process of digging, but also lost credit on the flagpole toi the amounts paid in. The moral this, “Be strong and never show it. but use your strength to dig awaj those who do. *
AWAHI'RI SPADEMEN. % Another very successful function was held in the hall at Awahun on Wednesday evening to swell the funds for the "Spademen’s” queen. was a very large atendaiico and a considerable sum was raised. During the evening several competitions were held, such as nail-driving; for men and women, "putting the eyes in a pig. and various others, vrtuch caused considerable amusement. The dance music was supplied by Mrs McCai ty. of Awahuri, and an excellent suppei was served. Dancing was kept going until 1.30 a.m,
