ROSEMARY REES COMEDIES

FUN AT THE OPERA HOUSE

The New eZalanders are coming into their own. Quite recently this paper expressed unqualified admiration of the Maori opera "Marama" after its two appearances in this town, and now we welcome quite another enterprise, that promoted by Miss Rosemary Rees who, after establishing her reputation as a playwright and actress im the Old World, has returned to her native country with an English comedy company to demonstrate, in propria persona, just how that reputation has been made, and deserved. Last night two comedies were psesented, both quito novel in conception and full of piquant situations and eartickling dialogue. In the first, "Will you walk into my parlour?" Miss Rees appears as a full blown American actress who "takes down" an adventurous schemer in approved fashion and to the accompaniment of hilarious laughter from an audience from whom her secret is hidden till the psychological moment. In the second, "The Amateur Adventuress," Miss Rees appears with her whole caste, and carries out a series of complicated experiments with the imagination of her hearers until she finally reaches an adroit and satisfactory climax to the accompaniment of a perfect hurricane of merriment. Contributing principally to the success of this comedy in three acts is Miss Katie Towers, a character actress of extraordinary versatility, and with a delightful brogue. No finer comedienne has been seen upon the local stage. She bobs up serenely as the aider and abetter of the adventuress, a part in which Miss Rees sustains most realistically her well-earned reputation as a comedienne of exceptional parts. The supporting company is a strong and convincing one without exception, and with the result that there Is not a dull moment from curtain to curtain. The company, which is on its way to Auckland, will be seen here again tonight, and can look confidently forward to a large booking and a warm reception on its merits alone.
