HOOKEY.

MEETING OF MANAWATU ASSO-

CIATION.

The twenty-second annual meeting of the Manawatu Hockey Association was held last evening. Mr M. H. Oram presided.

The annual report, after congratulating members on the success of the past season, expressed the hope that members would use their best endeavours to make the coming season even more successful. During the past season six teams had competed in the Wednesday, four in the Saturday, and four in the ladies' competition, representing approximately 220 players. The Dawick Shield competitions for Wednesday teams was won by Y.M.C.A., and the Saturday competition for the A. E. Luen Cup by High School Old Boys. High School Old Girls won the ladies* competition. Two flve-a-side tournaments were held, Post and Telegraph winning the Oates Cup in the first tournament, and Phoenix A (Wanganui) the Manager's Cup in the second; the Goss Cup for ladies was won by Hinekoa (Feilding). Seven representative matches were played during the season, of which Manawatu won four, drew one, and lost two. The lady representatives took part in the New Zealand championship tourney held at Gisborne, and although unable to secure the coveted honours, had maintained the reputation of Manawatu. Other matches were played against Feilding . and a Southland touring team. The Association had neen represented in the North Island team by V. Tucker and O. K. Perrin. The Association had transferred its headquarters to the Recreation Ground last season, where there were four grounds. They were indebted to .he Borough Council and Mr Black, ~he curator, for their assistance in the matter of grounds, and noted with pleasure that the outside grounds had been ploughed and levelled so that chey should be in good condition for next year. During tne coming season they might suffer some inconvenience in respect to grounds, and the Association asked players to be patient until the recreation ground was again available. The committee regretted that it was again unable to get the game started among the boys, but a competition for the Cousins Cup had been played by the girls, and the Cup was won by Terrace End. With regard to finances, it would be accessary to considerably increase the., contributions of the various clubs in the coming year. The thanks of the Association were tendered to suporters who helped them to send representatives to Gisborne, and to Messrs Oram, Nicholls and Wallace for donations to the fund. Special thanks were tendered to Mr C. Aitchison for placing his room at the disposal of the committee.

The balance-sheet showed a credit balance'of £SO 5/7. V In moving the adoption of the report, the chairman said the finances were not quite as satisfactory as they might be. Although the Association held a fair amount in hand, a large proportion of the profits were made out of the Gisborne tournament. The incoming committee would have to consider seriously the question of increasing the subscriptions from the clubs. They had to face a certain amount of capital expenditure, and if the ladies' tournament was held here this year as hoped, they would require to have their finances in a sound position. In this connection they would also have to make a public appeal. The chairman also mentioned the difficulty of securing grounds, in the coming season, but pointed out that if they were patient, good grounds would be provided at the sportsground next year. The report and balance-sheet were adopted without discussion. Before the election of officers took place, the resignation of the hon. secretary (Mr L. Jackson) was received. Reference was made to the very good work done by Mr Jackson for the Association, and their best thanks were passed to him. '

The following officers were elected: Patron, Mr J. A. Nash, M.P.; president, Mr M. H. Oram; vice-presidents, Messrs W. Oates, W. Strang, Jas. Wallace, B. W. Nicholls, L. Jackson and Dr Barnett; vice-president to N.Z.HA, Mr M. H. Oram; vicepresident to N.Z. Ladies' H.A., Mr L. Jackson; delegate to N.Z.H.A., Mr G. W. Ford; delegate to N.Z.L.H.A., Mr E. C. Griffen; hon. secretary, Mr C. B. Lye.

The further election of officers, and discussion on the proposal to raise the subscription and the amendment of rules, wei-e held over till a meeting to be held next week. Messrs Kerslake, Jackson and Tucker were appointed to wait on the Borough Council with reference to grounds.

It was decided to hold senior and junior men's competitions, and also a ladies' competition on Saturdays, and senior and junior men's competitions on Wednesdays.

It was resolved to enter a challenge for the Nordon Cup. The question of holding the N.Z. ladies' championship tournament was discussed, and it was decided to make application for the tournament to be held in Palmerston North this year, and in Ihe meantime to endeavour to arrange with the A. and P. Association for the use of its grounds for a week in September for this purpose.

Letters were received from Woodville and Rongotea Clubs asking for affiliation with the Association. —Referred to tlyj incoming committee. — The secretary (Mr L. Jackson) explained that it would be necessary to obtain the consent of the Feilding Association before the Rongotea application could be granted, as Rongotea came into Feilding's district.
