On the Wanganui track yesterday morning, useful work was done by Tivoli, Rose Queen, Khartoum, Western Boom, Desire, Amber Tips, Mal- : lngerer, and a number of others. Zola (E. Copestake) and Sir Fisher (W. Weller) had a round over the big fences, and both gave a splendid display of jumping. They kept together all the way, taking each obstacle without the semblance of a mistake, the exhibition of fencing being one of the best seen here for a long time. Erin's Isle went out with Warrawee for a schooling lesson over the hurdles, but Warrawee cleared out from the Maniapoto gelding, who did not run too .kindly. Warrawee shaped very well indeed, and gives every promise of making good over the small sticks. Flying Master ran five furlongs in 1.5, finishing l well ahead of Legato, while Tirana beat Munition over four furlongs in 53.

The two Great Northerns are the roost richly endowed jumping events In the Dominion, the stake money being 2000 sovs" for each event.

Bagdad appears amongst the n6minatibns for the principal flat races at the Auckland Winter Meeting. The Auckland Winter fixture has in the past been a favourite one with trainer Stewart Waddell.

The late Mr Joseph Lyle, who died i Queenstown recently, was well chown amongst sporting men in the

Western District some 30 odd years ago. He was the first secretary to the Birchwood Hunt Club, established in 1886, and one of the strong advocates 'or steeplechases being first put on :he programme of the Riverton Racing Club. He was a member of committee and steward of the latter club for many years.
