MAY DAY.
DEMONSTRATIONS IN JAPAN.
[By Electric CJabla —Copyright.] [Aust. and N.Z. Cable Association.] (Received Tuesday, B.S p.m.) TOKIG. May 2.
May Day was marked by Labour demonstrations of considerable importance throughout the Empire, especially in Tokio, Osaka, Kobe and Yokohama. Meetings adopted resolutions favouring an eight-hour day assistance to unemployed and the extension of the franchise to labourers. The paraders in Osaka carried a banner inscribed: ’’Revolution is near at hand!” The police guards were heavily reinforced, but generally did not interfere with the demonstrators, except in Tokio, where fifteen arrests were made, including one woman.
