Palmerston North gavei a beautiful rendering of the piece. The concerted portions were deep and melodious and the individual playing was creditably carried out.
The judge (Mr G. Buckley), of Wanganui, commented on the increasing offence of rough playing and said it was time the bands learned that the general public did not like it. He hoped the bands would not take his remarks at hypercriticism, but as welcome instruction. Mr E. R. B. Holben appealed to the public to attend in large numbers at the final contest to-day as ho understood the guarantors still had a fair amount of money to make up. The judge's comment upon the Dannevlrke Band's performance in the Quickstep Competition, on Wednesday (Dannevirke getting secona place in the march, and the highest points for music): —"A very finetoned band; never at any time harsh, trombones, basses and euphoniums always ..sympathetic; this is a splendid performance and you have set a very high standard for the -other bands to follow. Maximum points 100; points gained 93." A fine exhibition of drum-beating has been given during the contest by Mr A. Berryman, chief cornettist of the PalmerstOn North Band. The exhibition was witnessed in the Domain by a large number of people.
