OUR CONTEMPORARIES.
Error flourishes in an era of censorship, and truth comes to light only through free and unfettered discussion. It is our considered opinion that "Red Europe" and certain other books which we know arc prohibited would do much less harm if they were on open sale in every book-shop than if they were circulated secretly with all the prestige which is given them by the admission of the New Zealand Government that it is afraid to let the people read them. —Christchurch "Times." i
Wages must come down In sympathy with' the fall in the values of commodities and the changed economic conditions, and if the reductions are not voluntarily accepted they will be enforced through unemployment. That is inevitable, and that is what we are moving towards. The reduction in wages must also be felt in the Civil Service—indeed, if the Statistician's figures disclose a reduction In the cost of living, a corresponding reduction must be made in the Government service, beginning with the salaries of members of Parliament, whose services are valued by themselves at much too high a rate. — "Mercantile Gazette."
