HOROWHENUA NOTES.

(From Our Own Correspondent.) The Horowhenua A. and P. Association met on Saturday, the president (Mr G. Tully) being in the chair. A .statement was presented in connection with the recent, show, which slated thai the fixture had been a big financial success, and that the Association would have close on £4OO to carry on with. The president considered this a very satisfactory state of affairs, and expressed the hope that the Association would continue to prosper, these sentiments being supported by Mr S. A. Broadbelt, Messrs R. V. Brown, A. McLeavey and C. 11. Bould said that the building scheme for the housing of stock should bo continued without any great delay, and Mr N. Horrobin stressed the need of a properly laidoul ring in the centre, of the grounds for the competitions and sheep dog trials. Both matters were referred to the Ground and BuildingCommittees for report at next meeting. Arrangements are to be put in hand immediately for the supply of green fodder for the next show.

Mr F. H. Gorringe was appointed at a meeting of debenture-holders on Saturday to the vacancy in the racecourse trustees, caused by the death of the late Mr B. R. Gardener. The local school children are to bo taken to Plimmerton on March 4th for the annual outing. The Borough Council a couple of weeks ago allocated stands in certain parts of the town for the use of taxis and private cars, in order to secure some sort of control of traffic—a provision that is badly wanted. Up till now cars were left anywhere, and often stood two or three deep on each side of the main streot, leaving only a narrow track for traffic to pass through. As is usual with such reforms as that brought about by the Council, there is quite a storm of criticism from certain quarters, but the Council has the satisfaction for knowing that it. has made a move) in tho rig-lit direction. The death took place a few days ago of Mr "Jim" Retter, who will be well remembered by sports of 15 or 20 years back, as a successful trainer and rider in tho Rangitikei district.

At the Chamber of Commerci meeting on Friday evening-, Mr S. Hal gave notice to move at the next meet ing, that it be a recommendation t' change the statutory half-holida; from Wednesday to Saturday. It is just twelve months ago sine Levin was in the throes of a Mard Gras tor the beautiucation of flu town, and after really commendable work by the four queens and thei. numerous supporters and committees a sum of £I4OO was cleared and handed to the local Beautifying Society, evidently for the purpose of putting- the beautifying work ir hand. That's) about as far as it has got. Some of the local bodies wrote asking- the Society what it intended doing', but there is no record that it raised energy enough to reply.
