Sir John Findlay, K.C., of New Zealand, has arrived in London. Councillor J. Linklater, chairman of the Kairanga County Council, was appointed yesterday to represent the Council on the Palmerston North Technical School Committee. Two well-known Dominion sportsmen, Mr Harold Bj-own, of Wellington, and Mr Frank Armstrong, of Hawke's Bay, returned to Wellington on Monday by the Manuka after a visit to the Old Country. The Premier, accompanied by. Mrs and Miss Massey, arrived at Dunedin last night. He will attend the races to-morrow and the agricultural show 'on Friday, returningttiorth on Saturday morning. The resignation of Mr R. Michie from the committee of the Terrace End School was received last night. Mr Michie has been transferred to Wanganui. A vote of thanks was passed to him for his valued service* The engagement is announced V an exchange of Miss Sylvia Dorlt Aiken, only daughter of Mr and Mrs James Aiken, of Palmerston North, to Mr'Trevore Ethendore Stringer, eldest son of Mr H. G. Stringer', Feilding, and late of Takapuna, Auckland. Messrs T. Kerslake, H. McEwen, W. Crump and J. H. Stevens having been associated with the progress of the town of Bulls, will represent the Palmerston North Bowling Club at the opening of the Bulls green to-day, the land for, which was the gift of the late James Bull. > •The "Greymouth Star," in recording that Rev. Father O'Kane, Reefton, has been appointed to the teaching staff of St. Patrick's Collegey pays this unusual tribute:. "General regret will be expresed at Father O'Kane's removal from Reefton, where he has been the mainstay of football for.the past two or three seasons. He was un. doubtedly one of the cleverest backs seen on the Coast for some time." , The French Government has awarded the Medaille de la Reconnaissance Francaise to several Aucklanders for their services during the war. The recipients include Messrs J. H. Gunson, the Mayor; H. D. Robertson, secretary of the Red Cross Society; and A. W. Gillies, a member of the National Efficiency Board. An award has also been made to the Home St. Girls' Grammar School in recognition of support accorded the French cause. By the death of Mr Michael Hickey jj at the Palmerston Hospital last night (as the result of injuries received on Saturday afternoon whenia car driven by Mr J. Muir collided with his bicycle) Palmerston loses one of its oldest identities. The late Mr Hickey was born in Limerick 65 years ago, and came to New Zealand in- a ship half of whose passengers died of fever. He arrived in Palmerston when the town was merely a spot on the map, and had resided here for about 45 years. He was the Borough Council's oldest employee, and had acted as poundkeeper for over 30 years. Mrs Hickey survives her husba,nd. The two elder sons are dead,, and four sons and four daughters are still living The family has the sincere sympathy of a large number of friends in their sad and sudden bereavement.
