WI-NGA-TUI.

(To the Editor.) Sir, —T notice an article in your paper quite recently and reprinted in the “Otago Daily Times” in which you advise the Union Co_ to revise the names o£ their steamers,’ citing "Wingatui” as not being a Maori name. If you enquire, from any of the Maoris you will find that the proper name is “Wi-nga-tul” not. Wing-a-tui —"Wan-nga-nui” not Wanganui—"Mau.nga.nui” not Maung-a-nui. The old schoolboy play upon the word Wing-a-tui is 60 years old to my knowledge. I am, etc. THOS. M. B. MUIR, Invercargill, January 29.
