PARIS GIRL HAUNTED.
A young girl belonging to the Paris underworld, who for two years had been haunted by the thought of a crime she had not committed and had been unceasingly dogged by the police. has been acquitted on a charge of murder brought against her in February, J9lB. Two girls were walking along the Paris boulevards at a late hour in November. 1916, when suddenly one of them uttered a cry and sank to the ground. She was immediately taken to the hospital, but died a few hours afterwards. Death was caused by a violent knife thrust. Suspicion fastened on her companion, Joanne Lacoste, but when a search was made for her she had disappeared. Two years later Lacoste was tried by default and condemned to death for murder. Exactly two years later to a day Lacoste was discovered occupying a handsome villa with another girl. The inconsistencies in the evidence of several witnesses, combined with a brilliant and convincing .speech by her counsel, resulted in the verdict of murder of 1& 1S being quashed, and she was acquitted.
