NEW ZEALAND CHAMPION SHIPS. BRILLIANT ROUND BY KIRKWOOD. (Per Press Association.) HAMILTON, Last night. The third day of the New Zealand championship tourney was held under ideal conditions, with a clear sky and a steady, cool wind from the south. Kirkwood went out in the morning with Moss, the Auckland professional, and opened up brilliantly, 3-4-3-4-6-4-4, but dropped a stroke at each of the following holes, completing the first half in 36. He opened up the second half, 3-3-4-4-3-4, and it looked as though he was about to create; a new record for the course, but bad putting spoiled the 16th and 17th, and he found the rough with his drive at the ISth, taking five at each hole and putting in a 73. The match, McEwen v. Brooks, was very exciting. The latter played a splendid long game and was two up at the turn. The next two were halved and McEwan won the 12th with a four. The next was halved. Both were near the pin at the tricky 14th. McEwan lowered a putt for a two and Brooks just lipped the hole. Brooks won the 15th with a brilliant four McEwan evened by taking the 16th, 410 vards, in three. Brooks just touched the hole, but failed to even. The next two were halved, McEwan thus winning, one up. East, the Australian, was four up on Blair at the turn; then Blair won two holes, halved two and reduced him to dormey two. East won the 16th and won three up and one to play. , , McCormiek was three down and five to play on Lock, but won the next three holes, and taking the 16th, 410 vards, in four, took the lead. He squared the next two and won, one "p. , v Humphreys (Christchurch) put up the best performance in the first round of the amateurs, beating Rex George at the 20th after an exciting match. Dr Ross went out in 37, against J. Harold, and was one over fours at the 13th, where the game '■nded. Imlay Saunders, playing against Bogey in the morning, notchew a two at a 320 yards hole out of the rough with a brassie. The Mavor is declaring a public holiday on Friday morning for the professional match, Australia versus Vew Zealand, when Kirkwood and East will be pitted against Douglas and lies. r^.-o^,.^^ The teams match tor the O Roike Vase was won by Auckland, with Wanganui three points off second. The bogey match resulted:— J. B. McEwan (5), D. O. Whyte (5), and C. Seymour (6), two up; Rice (6), A. E. Whyte (6). and G. Saunders (2). one J. Wilson (3), all square. PROFESSIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP.
First Round.—Kirkwood (Victoria) beat Moss (Auckland), seven up and live to play; McEwan (Wellington) beat Brooks (Hutt), one up; East (NSW.) beat Blair (Auckland), two and one ; McCormiek (Waihi) beat Lock (Wanganui), one up; D .°"f^ 3 (Miramar) won from Martin (Auckland) and Clements (Manawatu) won from Hood (Napier) by default. Ties (Shirley) and Butters (Christchurch) had byes in the second round. To-morrow the play will be. Ties v. Douglas, Kirkwood v. Clements, McEwan v. East, McCormiek v. Butters.
