HOCKEY.
MANAWATU BEATS WELLINGTON. A Wellington Hockey representative team met the Manawatu representatives on the Sports Grounds yestetrday, when the local men were successful by five goals to two. Wellington (yellow and black) was represented by: Adams, Chambers. Wfoiitaker, Johns, Frederich, Trilford, Price (captain), Blinzard, Ebbett, Page and Bay. The Manawatu (green and white) team consisted of: Liddel, Fitt, Anderson, Kyle, Dixon, Bramwell, Wallace, Whitehead, McLaughlin, Hansen and Cousins. Manawatu were without the services of Tucker, Crump and Perrin. The game was marred to a large extent by the incessant downpour of rain, and at one stage it was stopped, but had to be resumed with the heavy shower continuing. The scores gave a good indication of the relative strength of the two teams. The visitors showed good combination in the forwards, but Manawatu showed their superiority in both back and forward departments. Liddel, Fitt, Anderson and Dixon were the best among the local forwards, and Bramwell and Hansen among the backs. Cousins was as usual very reliable in goal, though he took some liberties which resulted in one score for Wellington. The left wing forward, ann Price at right half, were the best performers for Wellington.
The game opened with even play. Eventually there was a corner nt the Wellington end from which Dixon had hard luck in not scoring. Bramwell, Pitt and Liddel were prominent in several smart but unsuccessful attacks. Manawatu continued pressing till Price relieved with a long liit resuiting in a corner at the Green's end. Cousins saved a hot shot at the goal, iiain interfered -vsith the play short lv after. Almost immediately on resumption Pitt scored from a corner hit. Manawatu 1. Wellington 0. Consins saved from a determined Wellington attack. A good Green forward rush ended in Liddel finding- the net the second time. Manawatu 2. Wellington 0. Pitt was responsible for Manawatu's third goal just before half time. Manawatu's left wing opened up proceedings in the second half with two spectacular individual efforts which unfortunately came to nothing. Wellington opened up a likely attack. Their wing gained
1 possession and centring in a good position, one of the forwards scored Wellington's first goal. The Greene kept up an incessant attack, but 1h« Wellington defence was sound till aift eventually shot. n. hot one in, FVlanawntu 4, Wellington 1. From thr bully Wellington attacked strontrb and ;; smart piece of combination work saw their second goal netted. The Greens, headed by Fitt. Dixon !and I-lddel opened up play after the bully. Liddel got possession and a good Individual effort resulted in his again netting the sphere. This was j the last score, the srame ending Maiw- [ v/atn 5, Wellington 2.
