MAGISTRATE'S COURT.

CIVIL CASES. A civil sitting of the Magistrate’s Court was held before Mr J. L. Stout, S.M., at the Courthouse yesterday. UNDEFENDED CASES. Judgment for plaintiff by default was given in the following undefended cases: —M. Davidson v. H. C. Fewer, £ls (>/11, with costs £1 14/(5; A. J. Havill v. G. Macdonald, £6, with cost§ £1 6/6; Cooper and Rutherfmd v. C. H. De Mey D’Alkemade, £2 2/, with costs 16/; Agnes M. Briggs v, Thos. Jones, £S, with costs £1 3/6; W. P. Godfrey v. H. K. Turner, 1/, with costs 5/; W. F. Godfrey v. Jas. Hassell, 10/6, with costs 5/; L. E. Whitaker v. V. Morrison, 10/6, with costs 5/. H. R. Waldegravo and others (Mr F. H. Cooke) proceeded against A. R. Bradley for £ll 14/, said to be due for arrears of rent.—Judgment was for plaintiff for £lO, with costs £2 1/. J. E. Davis was ordered to give up possession of a tenement to A. Duncan (Mr Fletcher) by August 27, 1920. OTHER CASES. FOUR CHARGES. James Desmond Doyle was charged that on July 2G, at Shannon, he was found on licensed premises, the Albion Hotel after hours; that he refused to quit the premises when requested to do so by the licensee; that he resisted Constable McGregor in the execution of his duty; and that he was found drunk in a public place. He pleaded guilty to all charges. Senior-Sergeant Fraser stated that the offences took place about 10 o’clock last evening. Constable McGregor received a complaint from the licensee of the hotel, who said that Doyle was in a room up stairs with two boarders and was creating a disturbance and using bad language. When requested to leave the premises by the licensee, he refused to do so. Constable McGregor arrived and evicted accused by force. On the street Doyle resisted the constable and a struggle took place. Eventually, with the assistance of the licensee, accused was taken to the lock-up. Accused had previous convictions for assault and drunkenness. On the first charge Doyle was fined £l, in default seven days’ imprisonment; on the second, £l, in default seven days; on the third, £2, in default 14 days; and on the fourth, ho was fined 10/. Costs amounted to 4/. CHARGES OF THEFT. Sinclair Gordon Cook, a young man, was charged that on or about July 2, 1920, at Dannevirke, he stole one rainproof overcoat valued at £10; that he escaped from custody; and that onJuly 9 at Palmerston he srole one portmanteau, one military hat, one oair of Wellington boots, the pair of field boots and other articles of a total value of £33 10/. On the application of the police he was remanded till next Monday. Harold John Faulkner admitted having stolen a bicycle, the property of Bartolo Barnao. —Detective-Ser-geant Quirke stated that accused, who was a young man, had always been a hard worker and with the exception of this case had always borne a ;i good character. —The lad’s father stated that his son had contributed largely to his mother’s support while he (the father) was away with the N.Z.E.F. — His Worship dismissed the case under section 237 of the Justices of the Peace Act and ordered the youth to pay the amount he had received by sale of the bicycle (£1) back fo the person to whom he had sold it. INSOBRIETY. A first-offending inebriate, who had the sum of £64 4/1 in his possession when arrested, was fined 10/.
