Firem.m held their annual smoke concert on Tuesday evening, and Oddfellows unveil a roll of honour on Wednesday night. Fire Board. —Inspector Hugo recommended the purchase of a 35-foot trussed telescopic ladder, Pretoria pattern, a steel fire alarm system, gas masks, box respirator patterns, and a hose repair outfit. During’ the year there have been 4 3 musters of the brigade, including 14 calls. Present membership, 21. Total hose, 2600 feet. Seven sleep on the station. Value of properties in borough damaged by fire during year, £41,000; insurance, £30,000. Resolved that E. Wiggins be appointed fireman, and material required be obtained. The Fire Brigade urged increased remuneration and boot allowance. Consideration deferred. Resolved that deputy-super-intendent’s house be connected with ’phone. The estimates, £7OO 16/, were approved. The late Mr P. J. Herlihy was formerly a member of the police force, and was at one time stationed in Ashhurst. An accident, and subsequently influenza, hastened his end. He was 67. Revs. Fathers Daly and McManus conducted the funeral service. Deceased leaves a widow and family. Football fixtures. —Seniors: Excelsior v. Old Boys, United v. Ruahine. Juniors: Old Boys v. Woodville, Excelsior v. Ruahine. Thirds: Old Boys v Boys’ High School, Excelsior v. Woodville. Miss Lydia Cunningham, daughter of Mrs J. Cunningham, of Pahiatua, who is attending school here, was run down by a motor-cyclist. A leg was broken, and she was taken to the Pahiatua- hospital. Miss Cunningham was staying at the time with relatives at Tiratu. WOODVILLE WHISPERS. Mr Geo. McFarlane, returned soldier, son of Mr G. D. McFarlane, is going- on the land, having drawn a section in the Shannon district. Mr Seymour, organiser for the W.E.A., addressed a well-attended meeting here. The Mayor presided. A committee was formed and also a class, Mr E. Lawn being secretary pro tern. Discussion and questions were invited, and Mr J. Harding addressed the meeting. Alexander Campbell broke a window of the Mangatainoka railway station to the value of 35/. He did this because the stationmaster declined to issue a ticket when Alex had not sufficient money. He got away, but was captured by the vigilant constable at Woodville. Justices Horne and Turnbull ordered him to pay the amount of the damage, giving him a fortnight to do so. Accused pleaded the old story drink. Mr J. Murray has made an important addition to his fine herd. He paid 220 guineas for a choice pedigree Jersey bull while he was in Taranaki the other day. Mr J. Mackie, returned soldier, has gone farming at Gisborne. The funeral of the late Mr W. H. Read took place here, and was attended by numerous friends and representatives of various firms and institutions. . A concert is being organised in aid of the new vicarage fund Mrs' R. Bennett, of Woodville, has sustained a bereavement in the death of her brother. Mr R. Johnson, in the north. Deceased was a married man and a returned soldier. Woodville A. and P. annual meeting will be held to-day. The profit on the year’s working was £2O. The report states that the last show was the most successful yet held by the Association. Special reference is made to the work of IVlessrs Tt. H. IMorgan, V. J Gilbert, H. J. Whitelaw, and condolence is expressed with the family oi the late Mr J. Murray, senior. PAHIATUA PARS. After considerable debate, the Farmers’ Union have adopted the graduated scale of subscription. It is as follows:—Up to £2OOO, 10/; £2OOO to £7OOO, £1; and over £7OOO, £-.
