NOTES, Two notices of motion to be brought forward at the New Zealand Racing Conference are interesting in view of the demands recently made by the New Zealand Jockeys’ Association. The first is an amendment to part 22, rule 6, and it is proposed to strike out in connection with the collecting of jockeys’ fees the words, “Less 21 per cent, thereon to be deducted by the club for collecting and paying, and for the responsibility hereby imposed.” In this connection it may be remarked that a number of the leading clubs do not at present deduct the 21 per cent. The Wanganui Club is also moving - in this direction. The president is moving the second, which is an addition to the rule limiting a day’s programme to eight races, and which reads: “Provided, however, that with the object of preventing accidents by limiting the number of starters, the stewards or committee of any club may with the previous approval of the president, divide any race into two races, and the stewards or committee of the club holding the race meeting at which such race shall be divided and run shall add to the stake an amount not exceeding the original amount of such race,” The Masterton sportsman, Mr W. R. Kemball, had not to wait dong for a return of a portion of the 1500 guineas which he paid for Mill o’ Gowrie and Rekanui at Messrs Buckland and Sons’ sale, for the first-named mare romped away Avith the Campbell Hurdle Race, Avhich was Avorth £350 to the winner. The Woodville Jockey f Club is approaching the Dates Committee of the Ncav Zealand Racing Conference objecting to the dates claimed by the Hamilton Racing Club for next season, which clash with the Woodville Club’s meeting The ManaAvatu Racing Club have the folloAving notice of motion on its order paper for the Ncav Zealand Racing Conference: —“That a special committee be set up to consider and report to the conference on the advisability of amending the present constitution of the New Zealand Racing Conference.” Hyllus raced very consistently through the A.R.C. winter meeting, and his success in the York Welter Avas well anticipated. The fact of H. Gray having the mount, owing to W. Ryan being absent in Wellington, would account for a lot of money going on Hyllus, Avhich brought him down to a short price, for the horseman named has a large following from among the public. As the race was run Hyllus was lucky to win, for it was only a fine bit of horsemanship on Gray’s part that landed him a Avinner by a head. Although only a five-year-old, Slowcoach must be a hardy customer, for when saddled up for the Winter Steeplechase at the A.R.C, meeting he did not give the impression that the severe race he had in the Great Northern had made much difference to him In the race he was nicely handled by Fielding, who had him well placed all the way, and though he had to be hard ridden over the concluding stages to defeat Omahu, he answered the demands made on him in the gamest manner possible, and his performance was an attractive-one. The winter is now here in real earnest and you will want a rain coat to keep the wet out and a warm one to keep the cold out, whilst attending the winter meeting. Alf. Mahon, the sporting mercer. The Square, has just the thing you want. Call on him today and make a purchase.*
