The engagement is announced.of Miss Isla Stewart (late N.Z.A.N.b.) daughter of Mrs Alex. Stewart, ot Essex Street, Masterton, to Mr *. It. H. Brice, of Marton.

Mr K. McDonald, who was appointed to a vacancy on the Campbell Street School Committee, was accorded a hearty welcome to the committee meeting last night. Mr Herbert Booth, the well-known mfssioner, now in Auckland (brother to General Booth) has received a cablegram from London announcing the death of his wife.

The following new members have been elected to the Manawatu Golf Club:—Messrs L. H. B. Grant, R Hood, A. (srigor, A. A. Langley, J. B. L. Gardner. J. N. Hallett, M. RGabriel. O. H. Porritt, P. E. Baldwin, H Beetham, H. McSherry, Dr. Wilson, and Captain Mead.

Miss Brvant, of Foxton, who is to be married to Mr Stanley Austin tomorrow, was entertained at a complimentary social by the Foxton Presbyterians last night and presented with a Shelley-China bowl in recognition of her services on the social side ot church work for several years.

Seven Ms.P.. Messrs Burnett (Temuka), Bitchener (Waitaki) Witty (Riccarton), Malcolm (Clutha), Hamilton (Awarua), Horn (Wakatipu). and Hudson (Motueka), started yesterday on a visit to the West Coast coalfields, to gain first-hand information on the subject, before the session.

Mr Herbert J. Duigan. of Wanganui. met with a painful accident last Mondav whilst email shooting with S or«e frien.'ts u.t Karioi. receiving-a number of pellets in the body aiid face, one of which, «n*°rtunatel>, completely destroyed the sight of the right eye. Mr Duigan is now well on the road to recovery.

Mr Harding, the American Republican Presidential nominee, is a newspaper man, editor and owner ot the -Marion Star," of Ohio. He is ot Scotch descent on his father s side. In 1900 Mr Harding entered the benate, ami was elected Lieutenant-Governor of Ohio for 1904-.5. In the Senate he is a member of the Foreign Relations Committee. He was an earnest supporter of President Wilson's Administration in the prosecution of the war, but later criticised him severely. At the end of the war, Senator Harding advocated prompt peacemaking and some legitimate co-operation among the nations of the world which wouiU lessen the danger of war. He opposed the League of Nations without effective reservations.

Mr F. Pirani's intended resignation from the chairmanship of the Wanganui Education Board was referred to last night by members of the Campbell Street School Committee. Mr A J Mahon, in moving that the committee should place on record its appreciation of the valuable services that Mr Pirani had given to the cause of education in the Wanganui Board's district said Mr Pirani had been an absolute grafter. His place would be liiirel to till notli for energy and interest. Other members spoke in leiicitious terms of Mr Pirani's devoted services. Mr Jackson regretted that it had not fallen to the lot of Mr Pirani to become Minister of Education The condition of the Education Department of this country would have been in a very different position to-day had he tilled tbat role. It was decided to send a letter of appreciation to Mr Pirani. * Mr E. R. Bryant's resignation as a member of the Education Board was also referred to with regret and his services eulogised.
