BONUSES MEAN MORE TAXATION (Per Press Association.) WELLINGTON. Last Night. Mr Massey has made a statement about the cost of the bonus to be granted to public servants. He says that it is estimated that the Treasury will have to provide about a million. The Secretary to the Treasury" cannot suggest any means of meeting the increased demand, except by the imposition of fresh taxation. Mr Massey comments that "there is the position in a nutshell. 1 had^ hoped during the coming session that we should he able to reduce taxation. That now seems out of the question. I shall not be able,” he adds, "to give a decision for at least a week on the points raised by the A.SR.S.” £240 A LIVING WAGE. DUNEDIN, Last Night. At a record annual meeting of the N.Z. P. and T. Officers’ Association. Dunedin branch, held last night, the following resolutions wore carried unanimously: (1) That the executive committee be asked to demand immediate payment of the bonus, and that the members who were absent with the Expeditionary Force be included. (2) That this meeting expresses discontent with the present scale of salaries, and asks that an allround increased remuneration be granted immediately, in order to cope with the increasing and alarming disparity between the present day salaries and their purchasing power. (3) That £240 be accepted as a basic living wage for a married officer of the Department.
