CROQUET.
The first annual club tournament is almost concluded owing to the beautiful weather of last week. It is unfortunate that the third lawn cannot be got in better playing condition, but the soil is too poor to grow anything but coarse clover grasses, and accurate play on it is impossible. Nevertheless players have taken things in the right spirit, and in the C contest Mrs Thornley after a game struggle just succumbed to Mrs Wilton by 3 points in the semi-final. Mrs Collinson has to play Mrs Herman Seifert in the other semi-final.
In the B division the decision lies between Mrs Brown, a, rapidly improving player, and Miss Ellis. The latter has few opportunities for play and her progress to this stage is therefore very popular. Mrs Blyth showed promise during the week. In the A section Mrs Baxter proved the winner after an exciting: struggle -with Mrs E. "W. Cave. Playing on level terms Mrs Baxter worked both balls to the peg, but for some time was unable to finish, owing to good shooting by her opponent. Mrs T. Murray is a promising player in this section.
The handicap doubles are to be played for next week, and then play for the trophies, very kindly presented by Mrs Rhodes Williams, of Wellington, and Mrs Patterson, of the local club, will bring the tournament season to a close.
