BOROUGH COUNCIL. (From Our Own Correspondent.) At the usual fortnightly meeting there were present the Mayor (Mr Murdoch), Crs. McMillan, Kelly, Fargher, Scott, Spencer, Gardner, ami Richardson. The Borough Engineer’s report on the electric lighting scheme was received. The Mayor said this was a matter of such importance it would be better to consider it at a special meeting. The councillors concurred in this. Mr J. Murray wrote on behalf of Druids’ Lodge protesting against paying the fee for licensing the hall, and said he would attend in person on the Council. The Mayor said it was perfectly plain the Druids’ Hall would have to fall in line; it was let for entertainments and meetings for profit, and therefore could not escape. It was resolved that unless the trustees of the property comply with the bylaw at once a summons be issued forthwith. The Rev. Mr Wheeldon wrote suggesting that the Council should allow grazing on the roads and charge a fee therefor. The Council declined to entertain the idea. It was pointed out the Council had no legal right to do such as the rev. gentleman suggested. The Department of Labour wrote reminding the Council that a meeting would require to be held in January fixing the weekly half-holiday. It was resolved that the town clerk call sucdi meeting on the first Friday after New Year. i It was resolved to hold the next meeting of the Council on the first Friday in the New Year. The Mayor moved that the fee for motor vehicles plying for passenger hire be reduced to £1 per annum. This was seconded by Cr. Pargher and carried. The Road Committee reported that Mr Clifford, the newly-appointed foreman, would take up his duties on Monday.
