dannevirke doings. Local firemen held their annual' reunion on Tuesday night. There was a big muster of members and friends. A very cordial welcome was extended to soldier-firemen, and the annual presentation of medals and awards took place. The Mayor presided. Mr and Mrs A. Allen, from the Waikato, are on a visit to relatives hero, Mrs Allen being a brother of Mr G. W. Wright. Mr Moorby, formerly of Kiritaki, wdio has been on a visit here, returned on Tuesday to New Plymouth. Sir Joseph Ward is on the job. He arrived in Dannevirke some time after 3 p.m. yesterday from Martinborough, halted a while, then motored to Hastings, and before leaving he said he was duo at Waverley next night, some 200 miles or more. Sir Joseph appears in good form, and made an interesting speech at Dannevirke. Here, he met among others, several old Liberals, and also Mr C. Hall, ex-member for Waipawa, and Mr R. B. Ross (the Liberal candidate for the Pahiatua scat). Alluding to the Mayor of Dannevirke’s remarks re the old out-of-date building that does duty for a post office Sir Joseph Ward remarked that when the now Government got in they would feel ashamed to see such a shed beside the palatial buildings elsewhere.

PAHIATUA LICENSING COMMITTEE. The quarterly meeting of the Pahiatua Licensing Committee was held at Woodville, at noon, on Tuesday. Present: Mr S. L. P. Free, S.M. (chairman). and Messrs J. D., Wilson, J. B. Westlake, E. Harding, C. S. Baker and G. J. Goldfinch. Club Hotel, Pahiatua. —Permanent transfer granted from T. Henley to J. Byrne, also renewal of the license for the remainder of licensing year. E. J. Knapman (Dudley Arms Hotel, Mangatainoka), application for renewal. The new building is completed and furnished, ami the licensee is in possession. Mr McShcrry, for applicant, said certain requirements were mentioned in the police report. —The committee thought these should be provided. Mr McShcrry undertook to instruct the owners accordingly and in the meantime the application was adjourned till next quarterly meeting. Royal Oak Hotel, Weber—Mr Lyon, for a licensee, Mr Harvey, said the new hotel building would be finished in January.—Adjourned till next quarterly meeting. COURT DAY AT WOODVILLE. Mr S.L. P. Free, S.M., presided over a sitting of the Magistrate’s Court in Woodville on Tuesday. Charged with,the theft of a postal package, a youth named J. C. Zimmerman pleaded guilty, and he was committed for sentence to the Supreme Court. THE DOG CASE. In the Anderson v. Galloway pug dog case, judgment was entered upon in accordance with the judgment of the Court of Appeal, any question arising to be settled iir'Chanibcrs. This case originally a claim for damages for the loss of a pug dog run over by Galloway’s car in the Main Street. On appeal, the original judgment was reversed in favour of defendant. STRAY STOCK. Percival H. Wilmhurst was fined 10/ and ordered to pay costs 10/ and solicitor’s fee .10/6 on each of two charges of allowing stock to wander at large in the borough. Roy Peebles pleaded not guilty to a. charge of behaving in an offensive manner in a railway carriage between Dannevirkc and Woodville, thereby causing annoyance to the other passengers in the same carriage.—The case was adjourned till the January sitting. CHARGES AGAINST PUBLICAN.

Several charges were preferred against R. H. Howard, licensee of the Commercial Hotel. Woodville, and the barman, Chas. Smith. -The cases arose out of certain charges against three young men, Tait, Marriott, and Hauis, convicted at the last sitting of being unlawfully on licensed premises after hours. hT was contended that the three latter were under age. Hence proceedings were also initiated against the licensee :and barman. E. H. Howard was further charged that on Ist December he exposed liquor for sale after closing hours. He pleaded not guilty. Constable Skinner said that the licensee’s wife was in the bar and there were ten or a dozen people preset, and there was liquor on the counter. Mirs Howard admitted they were mot boarders. Ho saw no money. Defendant Howard said the part\ all came home in the one ear from the Fcilding races. The party comprised E. Sullivan, J. Henderson, a barman from Dannevifke. Keddcll, Boyd, Foster, and Colthard. He invited them in. Only one drink was served. Witness shouted the drink. The Magistrate said he did not quite know how tar the law went as regards the supplying of bona fide guests. Ho would take time to consider. CAR CODLISTON IN GORGE. Walter Henry Batchelor, who did not appear, pleaded guilty in a letter to the Bench, to charges of dangerous amt negligent driving of a ear in the Gorge last February. Defendant bad left Palmerston North and only turned. The. evidence of A. H. Lovelock disclosed a collision between his ■ami defendant's cars in the narrow part of the Gorge as the result of defendant’s great speed. He had piemised to make good the damage, but ■never did so. flu one charge he was fined £5 and costs and the other charge was withdrawn. A MAORI FINED. On Monday. Hint Kapata was convicted for drunkenness and fined tl lor obscene language, in default 14 days, 7 days in which to pay the fine. THE BAHTATUA seat. u -I largely-attended meeting of the Labour Laity, final arrangements were made for the contest next week, the reports received from various parts of (he electorate were considered very encouraging. U arranged that Mrs Poem* should also speak at Mr hu-o s addresses in the three chiet centres just prior to the poll. Mr Ross (Liberal) had a successful meeting at Rua Ron and received the usual vote at the contusion of his address. , Mr McNieoJ (Reform) met many ot the electors at Piri Ph"i and had an excellent reception. He was accorded n hearty vote of thunks.
