FOOTBALL.

WELLINGTON V. MANAWATU. Advice has been received by the local Rugby Union that the Wellington rep. team will meet the Manawatu reps, on the Showgrounds on Saturday next at 2.30 pan. This notification is very gratifying, and it will be interesting to see how the local reps, will fare at the hands of such a good combination. It is now approximately seven years since the Wellington cracks paid us a visit, and next Saturday’s contest should provide football of the first water. Wellington has always been noted for the excellence of its representatives, and there should be a great attendance on Saturday next. It goes without saying that those who attend will witness football of first quality. The side-stepping and swerving tactics of the visitors’ rearguard are reckoned to be a treat to witness. NOTES. In view of the contest against Wellington on Saturday next the Selector has made some drastic alterations in the local rep. team. In the first place Dillon at full back has been replaced by Seeker and this should be of great benefit. Seeker is a fair kick, fairly fast, and a good tackier. Fairbrother takes Seeker’s possy in the three-quarter line. This player is a good scoring man and gifted with a fair turn of speed; his defence, however, is not too sound, and he would do well to look to his tackling and rush-stopping capabilities. H. Stew Tart has been put in the centre of the three-quarter line. This place should suit him, as he is a good defensive man, smart on attack and a strong kick his only fault is that of hanging on to the ball too long. Martin takes the second five-eighth position and should be fully capable of carrying out his job satisfactorily. Ingham at first fiveeighth is in his right place and should not give any cause for concern. Harris has been included as half and should prove the right man in the right place. Ho has been playing in this position throughout the season and should be well schooled in getting the ball away smartly to the backs. His defensive tactics are sound and “goes down” to the thick stuff in good stylo. The forwards are altered from last Saturday. Anstis has been discarded purely on account of his weight and will be replaced by Brown, whilst Dustin (who has recovered from his indisposition) wall again take his place in the pack. Taken right through the team is the best yet and it is to bo hoped that the members will roll up to practice and get some combination and scrum work knowledge. A special practice will bo held this afternoon on the Showgrounds at 4 p.m. and a further practice to-morrow afternoon at 4.30 p.-m.
