A Christchurch telegram reports the death of Mr M. Donnelly, a wellknown barrister.
In the by-election held on Wednesday fpr a seat on the Otaki Town Board, Mr W. Noble defeated Mr C. H. Williams by one vote. Mr A, D. Stanley, secretary to the Stratford A. and P. Association, has been appointed to a similar position with the Auckland A. and P. Association.
At Levin on Wednesday Miss Lesley Butt, youngest daughter of Mr R. Butt, was married to Mr Harvey Murray, only son of Mrs Murray, late of Wairarapa. Mr Will B. Mathoson, a well known settler of the Forty-mile Bush, has informed the “Age” that he intends to contest the Mastorton seat as an independent at the next election. The marriage took place at Levin on Wednesday of Miss Maud Alice Bell, second daughter of Mr and Mrs George 801 lof that town, to Mr Robert Emmett, of Oamarn, a recently returned soldier.
Mr James Fletcher, 20 Ada Street, | has received advice that his only son, Second-Lieutenant R. Fletcher, is re-» turning to New Zealand with draft 258 on the Prinzcssin, due to arrive in Wellington on or about 25th June. Lieut.-Col. and Mrs J, 11. Whyte are staying at the Club Hotel; Lieut.-Col. Whyte has been appointed ActingG.S.O. of the Palmerston North Military District, owing to Colonel McDonald taking the duties of O.C. district.
The engagement is announced of Miss Elaine Gurr, daughter of Mr and Mrs N. L. Gurr, of Dannevirke, to Mr S. Stanton Hicks, M.Ss. (N.Z.), and A.I.C. (Loudon). Miss Gurr and Mr Hicks intend to complete their medical studies at the Otago University, at which they are students.. Mr T. McCoubrie, of Ada Street, Palmerston North, has received advice that his son, Gunner Thos. McCoubrie, will be x-cturniag to Now Zealand with tlio 258 th draft, on the s.s. Pringcssin. Gunner McCoubrie left with the 9tli Reinforcements and has been over three years on service.
At the meeting of the Patriotic Society last evening, the Mayor (Mr J. A. Nash, M.P.), on behalf of the Society. extended a very hearty welcome to Mr J. 11. P. Strang, who has just returned from England. Mr Strang had been associated with patriotic work at the inception of the Society, and all who were with him then would remember the amount of energy lie had put into the work on behalf of the soldiers. There was plenty of patriotic work yet to be done —in fact, the hardest part of it —and he was sure Mr Strang would fall into line and work as hard us he had done in the past. Mr Strang appropriately responded. A further list of promotions and transfer.*! in the Port and Telegraph service contains the following:—Mr G. Hawke, postmaster, Feath?rston Camp, to bo senior clerk and telegraphist at Marten; Mr J. Kerr, postmaster. Eketahuna, to be senior clerk at' Masterton; Mr C. G. Rogers, M.O. and S.B. clerk, Palmerston North, to be tcllev-in-chargc at Hamilton; Mr F. O. B, Presse, senior clerk and telegraphist, Pjihiat.ua, to be postmaster at Sydenham; Mr J. Ross, telegraphist, Wellington (absent with N.Z.E.F.), to bo senior clerk and telegraphist, Pahiat.ua; Mr L. G. McDonald, telegraphist, Ashburton, to be tellor-ln-chargo. Masterton; Mr if. C. Potcholl, telegraphist, Tauranga, to be senior telegraphist, Mastorton.
