WELLINGTON, Last night. There was glorious weather for the /irst clay of the Wellington Autumn meeting. There was a large attendance, and the totalisator handled £34,507 10/. Results:—
FIRST HURDLES, one and threequarter miles.—3 Yankee Jack 1, 2 Papanui 2, 1 Multicipal 3. Also ran: 4 Gwynne, 5 Royal Four lengths separated the placed horses. Time, 3.32 3-5 (an Australasian record). ST. LEGER STAKES, seven furlongs.—2 Afterglow 1, 1 Star Lady 2, 3 Almoner 3. The only starters. Won by three lengths. Time, 3 minutes (a record for the race) PLUNKET NURSERY, five furlongs. —2 Red Pepper 1, 6 Some Kid 2, 7 Ermine 3. Also ran: 3 Amythas, I Murihiku, 4 Night Raider, 9 Royal Exchange, 5 Chacronia, 5 Maronne, 8 American Beauty, 8 Swanec River, 10 Vitella. Won by a head, second horse a nock awav. Time, 1.0 1-5. THOMPSON HANDICAP, one mile. —2 Sasanof 1, 1 Spanner 2, 5 Rude 3. Also ran: 4 Punka, 1G Nobleman, 8 Sweet Corn, 3 Glendower, 6 Nystad, 9 Mascot, 1.1 Kilrush, 14 Battle Song, 17 Vagabond, 19 Rose Pink, 13 Heathercote, 7 Melee, 12 Bagdad, 10 Marqueteur, 15 Tressida, 18 Matatua. It was a perfect start, at the end of a furlong Spanner led by two lengths and at five furlongs had increased his lead to "'our lengths. Entering the straight Sasanof had run into second place and won a splendid race by a neck, Rude three lengths off. Time, 1.3S (a record for the race and course). CHALLENGE STAKES, seven furlongs.—3 Warplane 1, 2 Affectation 2, 4 Printemps 3. Also ran: 1 Gloaming. At the barrier Gloaming moved too fast and the tapes throw him. Affectation led into the straight where Warplane joined him, and in a good race over the last two furlongs, Warplane won by a neck, Printcmps twenty lengths away. Time, l.'2G 3-5.
Gloaming -was lame in front on returning to the birdcage. SILVER-STREAM HANDICAP, one mile.—2 The Speaker 1, 7 Pretty Bobby 2, 3 Warlike 3. Also ran: 1 Risingham, 5 Cooing, 4 Torchlight, 8 First Salute, 9 Bondage, 6 Imaribbon. A length between the placed horses. Time, 1.41 15. RAILWAY HANDICAP, six furlongs.—2 Waimatao 1, 7 Bo Peep 2, 8 Demos 3. Also ran: 1 Acre, 6 Torfreda, 9 Killowen, 5 Tigritiya, 4 Lionskin, 3 Old Gold. Bo Peep was slow at the start. It. was a great finish, Waimatao winning by a head, Demos half a length away third. Time, 1.11 3-5. TINAKORI HANDICAP, six furlongs.—7 Astinome 1, 2 Black Mark 2, 1 Active 3.
