A public welcome is to be accorded Brigadier-General H. E. Hart, C.M.G., D.5.0., at Carterton to-day. BrigadierGeneral Hart, who left with the Main Body, was through the Gallipoli campaign, as well as serving in Erance, and returned by the Corinthic.

• Mr Martyn Abraham, eldest son of Mr and Mrs Lionel Abraham, will arrive in New Zealand by the Arawa, accompanied by his wife. Mr Abraham, who left New Zealand seven years ago, has served with the It.F.A. He is a member of the Middle Temple and in* tends eventually to practice in. New Zealand.

At a public meeting at Dunedin last night, Rev. Vincent King, who had taken a prominent part in social work for many years, and who had rendered invaluable service during the influenza epidemic, was presented with a motor-car and cheque for over £IOO, and a deposit slip for £IOOO, invested with tlic perpetual trustees, iu recognition of his services.

The death is announced of Mr Archibald F. McMinn, third son of Mr and Mrs Alex. McMinn, of Auckland. Deceased was particularly well known in football circles, having been a prominent representative player a few years ago. Of recent years his health had not been good, and ho was obliged to relinquish newspaper work iu which he had boon engaged in Carterton and Danncvirko. Mrs R. H. Whalley, of Linton Street, is a sister of deceased. The death is reported of Mr Charles Hinkley, a well-known resident of Bulls. He was born at Canbrooke, Kent, iu 1841, and landed in New Zealand 45 years ago, coming to Bulls where he had resided ever since. He died in the Wanganui Hospital. He is survived by four daughters and three sons, viz., Mrs G. F. Ingram (Bulls), Mrs R. T. Sanson (Sanson), Mrs C. Ellery (Rongotea), Mrs A. McGregor (Parawanui), Mr C. 11. Hinkley (Pemberton), Mr U. J. Hinkley (New Plymouth), and Mr G. J. Hinkley (Bulls). On the eve cf their departure from Pohangina Mr and Mrs Tows and family, who have been settlers of the district for some years, were entertained at a surprise party by their many friends. A very enjoyable time was spent in dancing, games, cards and singing, the gathering being kept up until the early hours of the morning. A sumptuous supper was provided by tho ladies, after which Mr O. Jerusalem, on behalf of the company, presented ilr and Mrs Tews with some valuable silver plate, and in making tho presentation referred to the esteem in which the family were held in the district. Mr Tows replied in suitable terms on behalf of the family.

One of Palmerston’s early settlers, Mr Sinclair McKay George, has died at Alfredton. The late Mr George, who w'as 86 years of age, formerly carried on a butchery business where the Manawatu Meat Co. is now situated. He was born in Caithness, Scotland, and came out to New Zealand in the “Bluejacket ’ ’ about sixty years ago, and left Palmerston for the Wairarapa in 1887. Deceased w r as one of the chaitcr members of the Oroua Lodge of Druids Ko. 5, also of Lodge Manawatu Kilwinning No. 47, K.Z.C. He is survived by a oTOwn-up family of three sons and throe daughters, Mr A. W. George is a nephew, and Mrs John Mounsey, of Palmerston, is a niece of deceased. It is just line to hear about the new industries constantly springing up in this Dominion —splendid examples of the hosiery-maker’s art are shown tort av at Collinson and Cunninghame’s.
