ROTORUA LAKES
[Per Press Association,] ROTORUA, Last Night
In the ease at present being heard before the Native Land, Court, in reference to the ownership of the New Zealand lakes, Mr Earl, counsel for claimamts concluded his address this afternoon. He characterised the Crown’s contention that the natives had never owned the lakes as outrageous, and referred at length to the Government purchase of the Wairarapa Lake. He quoted Bryce and Sheehan as admitting that the natives owned the bed of that lake by customary right. He also quoted the Land Court, minutes, showing that the Rotorua lakes had been included in claims and judgments, thus proving that the Maoris had property rights therein. He referred to the English authorities, especially the Lough Neagh case, contending that the law recognised the right of property in lakes.
The Court adjourned until Monday when Mr Earl will call evidence.
