APPEAL BOARD

YESTERDAY'S APPEALS. Win. Bell O'Callaghan was appealed for by his employer, Mrs 11. Palmer (sole proprietress of Messrs H. Palmer and Co.), who through her solicitor (Mr Oakley) stated that reservist was the third manager she had employed since the departure of her late husband (("■apt. 11. Palmer) on active service in 1914. Mr O'Callaghan had been sole manager and auctioneer for eighteen months ami had proved exceptionally capable. Endeavours had been made to dispose of it, but as the firm had been refused a lease of the property on which the premises were situated, it had been found impossible to sell the business.

William Bell O'Callaghan gave evidence in connection with the business transactions of the firm. The firm hud advertised for a manager, but only two replies were received, and both applicants were unsuitable. Decision was reserved sine die.

Arthur John I.obb, farmr, Foilding (Mr Ongley) stated that his position was the same as at his last appearance before the Board.

J, H. Lobb, father of appellant, stated he was managing two farms in Hawbc 's Bay, aggregating 900 acres. These farms carried 200 bullocks, and 70 sheep. On this account witness would not be able to take over his son's farm. —A further hearing of the appeal was adjourned to next sitting. Joseph Howl, dairy farmer. Glen Oroua, had their appeals adjourned till Friday, as was also that of Wm. Joseph Neylon, farmer, Foxton.

Edward George Rollo, milk tester, Palmerston North. —This appeal was adjourned to next sitting of the Board. Charles Eustace, engine driver, Foilding (employer's appeal). —The appeal was adjourned for further hearing till November sitting. Harold Ray Thorburn, tailor, Palmerston North. Appellant stated that since Ins last appearance before the Board he had been in negotiation with prospective buyers to take over his business, but the sales had fallen through. The partner in the business had also been called up and passed for camp. Further time was asked for to dispose of the business. —The appeal was adjourned to November sitting. The appeals of John Henry Hunter, farmer. Levin, and Randal C. Anderson, farmer, Halcombe, were adjourned to Friday. The appeal of John William Sporle, butcher, Foilding, was dismissed, leave being granted to November. Arthur Ernest Egliuton, farmer, Sanson, had a further hearing of his appeal adjourned to the November sitting of the Board.

There was no appearance of Stanley Eric Whitehead, clerk, Talmerston North, and the appeal was dismissed. David Buick, farmer, Palmerston North (Mr Oakley), whose appeal was adjourned from the July sitting, stated that his position was the same as at his last appearance before the Board. ■—Decision was reserved.

William Herbert Pink, farmer, Ohau, had a further hearing of his appeal adjourned to Friday. The appeal of William John Woollett, draper, Palmerston North, was dismissed, there being no appearance of appellant. In the appeal of Thomas Bertram Cheetham, farmer, Bunnythorpe, the Board reserved its decision.

Gregory Gerald Kelly, motor agent, Shannon, who was granted leave at last sitting of the Board in order to dispose of his business, stated that he had made every endeavour to sell or to obtain a manager, but had so far been unsuccessful. One intending buyer had recently been called up and passed fit for service.—The appeal was dismissed, leave being granted to January. Skipper Martin, milkman, Hirnitangi, had his appeal allowed on the grounds that he was not a reservist, being a three-quarter-cast Maori. The appeal of Wm. H. Hughes, baker, Levin, was dismissed, appellant being classed C.2.

Benjamin B. Bockett, dairy farmer, Raumai, had his appeal adjourned sine die.

George Glendinning, farmer, Rangiotu, had his appeal dismissed. The adjourned appeal of George Mercer, scutcher, Shannon, was dismissed, leave being granted till December. In the appeals of Thomas Stewart, Awahuri, and Eobert F. Garrity, bacon curer, Palmerston North, decisions in which were reserved from the previous da, the appeals were dismissed, leavo being granted till January.
