Withdrawal, Not Rout
FRENCH ADVANCE FOUR MILES. [Aunt, and N.Z. Cable Association.] ('Received Monday, 9.20 p.m.) LONDON, duly 29. The retreat began on Friday night by the enemy -withdrawing his main bodies from north of the Mane 1 , strong rearguards covering tin* retreat as they retired. Twelve hours later the French advanced four miles on a twenty mile front between tlic Ourcq and the Ardie. The Allied cavalry patrols are pressing forward at Chambreay, where the enemy is resisting with Jong range artillery and machine guns,, bill is unable to hold the French attach. The outstanding facts cf the present situation is that the enemy does not, retain a single inch of 1 lie ground gained by his offensive on the i.->t.i. ° There arc good reasons for believing that the retreat will be on a bigger scale than was at first anticipated, but it is still quite an orderly withdrawal and not a rout.
