Soldiers’ Allowances
AND CAPITAL LIMITATIONS. [By Telegraph. —“Times” Special.] WELLINGTON, Last Night. A reference to capital limitation of £SOO in the statement by Sir James Allen regarding Cabinet’s latest concessions to soldiers’ dependents has caused some uncertainty, as it might be read to mean that this applies to the soldier in relation to his wife and family. The limitation does not apply to them, but only comes into the position when the Soldiers’ Financial Assistance Board is considering a grant to the soldier’s widowed mother. The capital limitation has been extended to £SOO because nearly half of the, widowed mothers drawing grants have boon prejudiced I >y the increase in the widows’ pension in the form of a war bonus. The possession of £SOO capital is taken as tho receipt of an income of £25 per annum. Under the new scale the widowed mother may enjoy an income up to 15s weekly without prejudice to her claim for assistance from the Soldiers’ Financial Assistance Board. The receipt of the soldier’s allotment of 21s weekly, the widow’s pension of 15s, and separation allowance of 10s Gd (a total of £2 5s Gd weekly) is possible without placing the, recipient outside the scope of the assistance scheme.
