NOTES.

To-morrow with a bo a gala day at Foxton, the occasion being the annual race meeting of the Foxton Racing Club, which for many years past has been the most popular place on the coast ot spend Anniversary Day. This year unfortunately the Railway Department have seen fit to cut out tho railway service, thereby depriving many thousands of their day’s recreation,, besides losing hundreds of pounds of revenue, which in these days is badly needed. Arrangements have boon made, however, to get as many motor cars as possible 1o make the trip, and Hunt and Go. and tho Express Company will run their large motor lorries. Arrangements for the races are well in hand, the course is in excellent order, the fields are as good as can be expected under the circumstances. There will bo a refreshment booth on the ground, where luncheon and afternoon tea can be obtained, tho publican’s booth will be under the capable management of Mr W. Devine, of the Empire Hotel. Motor cars from Palmerston are requested to note that they must enter from the north end of tho course.

The first race of the day, which starts at 12 noon, is the Hack Hurdles of miles, for which there are 13 acceptors, Miss Sation 11.3 being at the top of the handicap, she ran a good race behind Portland Lady and Calais at Marton and if she has improved during the interval should hold the rest fairly safe, Want ran li'-e a duffer at Marton and is evidently in need of a rest, for he has been up a long time. IS T onc of the others have proved themselves at the lepping game yet, although Dasher Boy has a great track reputation and may run better this season, Blue Thread was well backed in the Bracelet at Marton and is n good looking sort of a noddy who

might materialise. Whatever beats Miss Sation should win.

The Himatangi Handicap, 6 furlongs, is next up for decision and bears a very open appearance, the much-boom-ed Turangapito being top weight with 9.5, he has not been seen out since Feilding where he won a race after a good set to with Rude, Cello 8.7 won nicely and beat among others the speedy Hupana, Vermillion 8.4 lia-» been handy on several occasions this year, Hustie 7.13 likes the distance a bit longer, Lady Edith 7.10 broke her maiden -at Foxton last year, Warmaid 7.9 is very well and will be hard to beat, Elevate 7.7 is back to form and will have lots of friends, Perrier 7.6 has been a disappointment, Goldbearing 7.1 has done nothing since he won at Bulls last season, Arihia and Pall Mall 6.7 have boon running down the coast without success and Warscot 6,7 is still a maiden. Turangapito, Cello and Elevate should have most friends on the day.

The Foxton Cup, 1} miles, is an old established event and has been won by some horses who have made names for themselves in some of the biggest races in the Dominion, without looking up records the writer remembers one winner (Halbadier) who won a New Zealand Cup. Trials 9.8, who is top weight, has recently- won two good handicaps, beating fields that arc more formidable than they will have to meet to-morrow, Rose Pink 8,3 is fresh from her successful West Coast campaign, Rude 7.13 is bred well enough to win anything and is the favourite pick at time of writing, Master Moutoa 7.12 is trained on the course and will hayc lots of backers, Altercation 7.11 is in winning vein, Quinn’s Post has been running really well in hack races recently and if started will be one of the hardest horses in the race to beat, Haumakaka 7.2 won a race at Hawke’s Bay at New Year, and is at last showing some of his old form, Sir Fisher 7,1 proved he could gallop at Marton and is a quiet tip, Bradamante originally weighted at 6.13 now has a 101b penalty and will carry 7.9, won two or three heats on the coast and is verywell at present, Jean Laddo 6.12 has been running fairly well this season. Trials, Rude and Altercation should dispute the places.

The Maiden Hack, of 7 furlongs, all 8.10, has a lot of new beginners engaged also some who have been in the limelight for some time without doing anything brilliant. Faparess, Gold Problem and First Line will be worth watching.

The Awahou Welter, 1 mile 100 yards, has a small field, which may bo still further reduced as Elevate, Faparess, Holyhead, Pall Mall, Arihia are engaged earlier in the day, Foeman 7.13 and Elevate if reserved for this race should run well.

The Anniversary Handicap, of 6 furlongs has eight runners, Waimatoa 8.11 being top weight. On recent running he will have a great chance of annexing the stake. Black Ada 8.8 won at Marton, Starengo 7.12 is reported to be very well, won a double at this meeting last year and if “horses for courses” is _ any guide might win again, Revocation 7.12 is a strong Taranaki tip, Interlude 7.7 has recently had a change of trainers, she seems to have gone off, Jean Laddo 7.6 and Bradamante 7.12 are engaged earlier in the day, Namur 6.11 has been very consistent this season and will beat more than beats her. Starengo, Black Ada and Waimatoa will be hard to beat on the day.

The Dash Handicap, 54 furlongs, has the biggest field of the day and should be a good race. Turangapito 9.7 has pride of place, Vermillion 8.9 next on the list, Humorist 8.8 beat a good field at Woodville and Coolpan on the same mark is on the improve. None of the others have done much to recommend them. The. winner should come from Turangapito, Humorist or Coolpan.

The Herrington Welter, of 7 furlongs, will be a good betting race. Kiltoss 9.5 is at the top of the handicap and on her recent form should run very well* Glorify 9.2 can muster up some pace and is very fit at present, Altercation 9.1, Cello 8.12, Haumakaka 8.8, Hastic and Namur 8.4 and Lady Araai 8.1 are engaged in other races during the day, Arlington 8.5 is very fast over hurdles, Mystified 8.2 is a very consistent performer and has been well treated, Victoris 7.11 is a ■has been, Parewanui 7.11 was missed out of the acceptances and will have lots of friends, who remember how well ho gallops over fences. Glorify, Mystified and Parewanui should be very close up when the judge’s box is reached.

Acceptances for the Pahiatua Meet ing will close this evening 9 p.m.

Nominations for all events, also second forfeit for the Jackson Stakes, I'9lS, at the Wanganui Jockey Club’s Autumn Meeting, close on Friday next, January 25th, at 9.30 p.m. with the secretary, Mr W. Hall, P.O. Box .15, Wanganui.

The holiday racing season is now over and you will be looking wondering what to do with the money you won at the meetings. Take a tip from a friend and invest some of it in a new rig-out from Alf. Mahon’s clothing and mercery depot, the Square. You will find that each article purchased at this wellknown establishment is a sure winner and guaranteed to wear well.*
