CAILLAUX’S CRIME.
Censor Finds Big Clue. WHAT WAS FOUND IN THE SAFE. [Aust and N.Z. Cable Association.] PARIS, Jan. 16. The excitement of the public continues, though the political adherents of Caillaux arc markedly quieter since Ms arrest, and many of them are showing a tendency to desert the ex-Premier. The safe in Florence (in which the papers were found that led to the arrest of Caillaux) was discovered owing to the telegraph office receiving a message for transmission to Florence reading: “I forbid the safe being opened,” and signed Eaynourd. The censor received information that Caillaux had travelled in Italy under this name, and reported the fact to the authorities, who requested Italy to open the safe. In the safe were found £IO,OOO sterling, in gold, some beautiful jewels, and also a list of Civil Servants to be dismissed if Caillaux returned to power, and a list of politicians to be rewarded. The papers found showed that Caillaux intended to seize power and impose peace, after rupturing the alliance between France, Italy, and Britain,
RELATIONS WITH BERNSTORFF.
[Aust. and N.Z. Cable Association.] WASHINGTON, Jan. 16.
Count Bernstorff urged Germany to capture the steamer Uraguaya, which was leaving Buenos Aires on January 30, 1915, carrying M. Caillaux and also important papers. One of Bernstorff’s messages quotes Caillaux as declaring that ‘ ‘ England is struggling for her existence.” Another said that Caillaux welcomed indirect courtesies from Bernstorff, but advised caution.
