More Escapes from Germany.

Eleven British soldiers and three Trench officers, all of whom had escaped from German captivity, arrived at an English port one day early in June. Although they all came from different internment camps—the men escaped in couples or threes —there was a general agreement in their stories that the British are treated with greater severity than are the prisoner* of other nationalities. "It was 'Gott strafe England' every day," said one of the party, "and the British were told that England was the chief enemy." At one camp many Serbians were badly bitten about the legs by dogs which the German sentries set on to them. The food conditions were utterly bad, and the parcels sent from England practically kept the men going. "It was a nasty knock for them every time we received our parcels," said one of the men. "The Germans boasted so much about the submarine blockade, and declared that England Avould be starving in a few weeks; but they said less and less on the subject when they saw our parcels and the food they contained, especially the fats. These parcels had a greater effect on the civilians than on the soldiers, for they knew that the statements made in the papers were not true." The hous ing conditions were very bad. At one place 260 men were located in a Toom 25 yards by 10, and they slept in hammocks infested with vermin.
