NOTES. 'Manawatu Summer Meeting opens on Tuesday next (Boxing Day), the second day is on Wednesday, and the concluding day is Friday. The acceptances are excellent all TOUna _, every race having a good field, and the .quality of the runners is wonderful considering the strength of the ' opposition meetings in other centres. ; Train arrangements for the three days have been made, so that visitors may get here by all lines leading to Palmerߣon. The two principal events are the Manawatu Cup (1% miles), and the Fitzhcrbert Handicap (6 furlongs). The Cup has a field of fourteen, and so far looks an open race, no favourite yet materialising. The other race, has 114 acceptors also, and the four best fancied are Lady Blade, Ba'ngitero, Astor, and Cease Fire, in that order. An interesting race is the Juvenile Handicap, which contains ■ a round dozen. The two biggest fields on the day promise to be th«. G Uies Hack (20), and the Trial Hate (80). The 1 management of the Club needs no recommendation, and given fine weather,, the meeting promises to eclipse all its predecessors, The first race starts at 12 o'clock,

'" Special trains leave Palmerston station for the course as follows: First day, 10.35, 10.53,11.3, and 11.15. Other , days, 10.40, 11.3, and 11.15. Owners and trainers are reminded that the Hawkc's Bay acceptances close on Friday. Mullingar otited Colonel Soult in a solid/galloP Ellerslie on Tuesday horning, the prad with the military name finishing nothing like so well as usual. Menelaus is pleasing them all at Ellerslie nad doing beter than Chakwana.. ' > Chortle amused himself with a solid mile, which he carved out with no . trouble in a bit worse than 1.45. lne '•'bright-eyes" caught the early buses to the Lane as an immediate result. Ardenvbhr makes friends every dij?at Ellerslie. There are friends in plenty to make up here from all accounts, enough material for three ballots lining up before the first chirp every morning, \ Private advices from the great CommeS ProvinceMM **K is-expected to make up for the %u Ellerslie on the grass on Tuesday morning.
