In the London "Sportsman" of August 10 there appeared an interesting article by R. Huxtable on racing in Russia. Huxtable, who trains and rides in that country, said that Pctrograu in July racing was going to be better than ever, the prizes ranging in value from £BO to £SOOO. The Fetrograd Clul> inaugurated several days' racing, and the total profits, about £20,000, went to the Red Cross Society. Some time back, Mr Zvegintzoff made large purchases of corn, straw, and hay, which he later retailed to "owners and trainers at cost prices, this being of great assistance to many small stables. On Sundays racing starts at 2 p.m., and on weekdays at 4 p.m., going on until 9 p.m., at which time it is still quite light There are from 14 to 16 races decided daily, and this is carried on from the end of May until September, the same course being used all the time, though the races vary m distance. In Moscow trotting is a very popular sport, and the totalisator turnover on the Trotting Derby alone was 1,250,000 roubles (übout £125,000) from winch it will be gathered the Russians bet heavily.
