Among the names in the Spring Hurdle Handicap at Riccarton appears the name of the ancient Nelson, DuduStrategist, who is asked to carry J stone, waimahuki is on the same good mark.

The big Riccarton Welter (400 sovs) is always a fine race at the C.J.U Meeting, and Tsiringamutu is landed with 10.13. She is unlikely to make the trip. Rewi Poto gets 10.7, , Hl* up on Gold Soult. The winner should arrive from the'top division m this lot.

Toki is : pleasing the Riccarton track touts by his manner of negotiating the' daily toil allotted to him.

Bisogne at Ellerslie looks cherry Tipe if Trcntrram form is auytlung to cro by. In the Naihai Handicap he iust missed oy a nose, although he had no friends to speak of, being considered over-green for the'job on the day.

L. H. Hewitt got straight to facts oa nis arrival at Riccarton, and after an absence of. ten years or so, was at work on Thursday morning piloting a numuer of horses in their morning gallops.

Shepherd King, the Caulfield Cup winner, seems to be blessed with .a particularly vicious temper. At the gates,, while waiting to get, into the weighing yard, the imported noddy lashed out and practically disposed of Marculfus. This bad temper seems, according to one Sydney writer to be a general thing with a number the English stallions. Highheld and Polycrates are two that are signalled cut for bad marks in this connection.

Wrestler developed lameness last week, and so "retired to a previously rreparod position," as the war cables say. Double betters please note.

Amon°- the casualties reported this week in Neva, the dam of Danube, who died at the Kinloch stud.

J H. Prosscr's team for the South Island will be Kockbound, Gold Soult, ;<nd Goldstream. J. Lowo will take down Chakwana, Seadown, and Matilda These te'ams are on the light aide," as, it is stated, the result of Trentham showing. Seadown is said to be always better than Chakwana en the Wellington tracks, but on the day of the race Kiddiford Bros.' prad always seems the more honest of the two.

Chortle nud Multiplication will both start in the Stewards', Sid Reid being on the big horse and Roy Reed on Multiplication. Chortle is well thought of just now, on the strength of r. rattling good late gallop. It mry be mentioned here, too, that Multiply should not be overlooked in estimating Cup chances.

Bern Poto was backed for pounds, shillings and pence, not forgetting whole battalions of dairy clique's up in the Cow Province, and at Waverley they even had the dividend worked out. No congratulations on his performance were subsequently heard.

Hoxton won a treble at Gisborne last week, and must have been a fine investing medium on the two day. Hexton started favourite in each event', and wound up the meeting by strolling in in front of Otara with (ive lengths to spare.

T>o New Zealand Oaks promises to he a better race this year than last, when Desert Gold won from IN ones. Bose Pink is possibly tho best perof the fillies but MnruKot, Glen Helen, Madam Butterfly. and Sweet Tipperary have recent form to p ; a little on. ■ Good news for Sports \,f. Mahon has inst received another /'.-pmentof then; hats which cabled so many to pick winners at the winter wkeHra early as there i-r bound to bo Trush to (jet one of these fndnonaWe £, There is also a fme selection of n.w ties, and thou #W * tfshm. hat and tie are *ur« to do well »t at! tho «««<*"■■••
