CONSCRIPTION REFERENDUM.
Anii's Lead by 82,000 Votes. FURTHER RETURNS STILL TO COME. (Aust. and N.Z. Cable Association) (Received Sunday, 5.5 p.m.) SYDNEY, Last Night. The referendum proceeded steadily. There was a complete absence of excitement. All the other States report that referendum day passed peacefully. . The regulations prohibiting the publication of results last night kept the city quiet. A record poll is anticipated. At present the figures indicate that majorities against conscription obtain in New South Wales, Queensland, and South Australia; while Victoria, West Australia, and Tasmania favour conscription. Present voting is inconclusive. Later returns will decide the issue.
The incomplete referendum returns for the Commonwealth were published early this morning. The following are results: —
Against conscription 722,306 For conscription 636,569 Final figures will not be available until to-morrow. Later. (Received Monday, 1.20 a.m.) The referendum position is practically unchanged. The latest figures, not including Queensland, show:— Against conscription 797,988 For conscription 715,037.
