STORIES OF BRAVERY.

8000 GERMANS KILLED,

PETROGRAD, Sept. 25

Many stories are related of Russian gallantly in the Vilna retreat. In one instance a regiment of Cossacks, which was cornered, extricated itself by brilliant daring with small loss. An infantry regiment cut off fought its way to the main body through the enemy, inflicting heavier losses than it suffered, and bringing back half a battalion of prisoners. The Germans were sometimes heavily punished through over-onfidence. At one point they advanced needlessly believing there would be no opposition because the Russians were without ammunition, but the Russians were well supplied, and lay low until the Germans rushed over the entanglements in close array. Then everything was let go together, and the Germans were practically swept out of existence. Eight thousand corpses strewed the fields, and scarcely one German escaped unwounded. f A DESPERATE BATTLE. ENEMY LOSSES HEAVY. i PETROGRAD, Sept. 25. A communique says there was a desperate uninterrupted battle near Novoalexandrovsk. Our troops with a dashing bayonet charge expelled the enemy from Vileyka. We captured eight German guns, including four howitzers and seven machine guns, and turned them on the enemy. We defeated the Germans near Logiucime and reoccupied the town. We captured a portion of the enemy's artillery after our cavalry had sabred the gunners. We dislodged the enemy from several villages south of Pripet. Our operations in Lutsk region were practically successful. We stormed the enemy's positions north of the town which we reoccupied, and captured in addition 4000 prisoners, machine guns and much equipment. Our troops with great dash seized the Krasho bridgehead and occupied villages south-west of Lutsk, killing manv Magyars with the bayonet. We prisonered 1000 in fighting for entry of the fords in the same locality. We drove the enemy back still further south-west of Krembovla.

A complunique says:—There was a more intense cannonade in Riga region. The Germans, using asphyxiating projectiles, made repeated desperate attacks on the Dvinsk front, but were repulsed. The enemy at Novoalexandrovsk gained our trenches, but were dislodged, and re-attacked in compact columns, but were met by artillery and rifle fire at close range, and retreated in disorder. The attacks were twice renewed and repulsed with enormous losses. Our heavy losses were the result of the desperate nature of the fighting, and the best proof of the bravery -of our troops. During the enemy's disorderly retreat from Loguichine district we prisonered many. In a hot fignt in two villages in Dubno region we prisonered 30 officers and 1600 men under a hurricane of artillery fire, which eventually forced us = retire toward Ikwa.
