She . had been ailing for some time past. ■ She was a' Wairarapa lady, her maiden , name being Hannah. Mr Lancaster will receive widespread sympathy. Mr J. R. Boose, secrotary of the Royal Colonial Institute, wko- is now in New Zealand on Institute business, visited Palmerston on Saturday. He is trying to raise the overseas mem- , bership to 100,000. The crux of the Institute's work is to effect "closer and permanent unity of the Empire.' 7 Committees will be formed in various New Zealand towns. Mr Alfred Ruff, one of Manawatu's old residents, died at his residence, Summerhayes street, yesterday morning, aged 70.i Mr Ruff was born at Auckland, where for some time he farmed with his father. He came to the Manawatu district 42 years ago, and became a well known and respected contractor. He resided for 28 years of that period at Bunnythorpe, but latterly had lived at Palmerston. A little over four years ago he was smitten with paralysis, and he had been bed-ridden ever since. Various complication? ensued, but throughout his trials he maintained the same spirit of cheerfulness which had characterised him throughout his life. He leaves a widow, two sons (Alfred, in San Francisco, and Arthur, at Wanganui), and three daughters (Mrs C. F. Doggett, Woodville, Mrs W. Pittam, of Taumarunui, and Mrs T. A. Wood, Shannon), beside nine grand-children. The funeral takes place at 2.30 tomorrow.
